Finally, I get a dragon attack inside a city

I've been jealously reading other people's accounts of dragons attacking within walled cities, but it has never happened to me, until yesterday. Well, once one attacked Winterhold, but that hardly counts, does it?

I was visiting an inn south of Dawnstar on a DB quest, and I thought my stealth had failed (it’s at 100, lol) because the mark turned around as I was making my attack. He had enough time to say, “What was that?” I thought he’d heard me, but then I heard it myself: a dragon to the south.

This was an elder dragon, and I’ve since read that at level 36 you can start seeing these. He was freeze-drying mudcrabs and goats, and even a mercenary when I caught up with him. It was then that I noticed a second dragon. This was http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Viinturuth. They seemed to be content flaming and freezing the wildlife when I had a brainwave: I’d kite them to Windhelm! It took some doing, singeing my eyebrows and freezing my backside off in the process, but I got them there.

Having a dragon inside a city makes for a lot of excitement. Everybody takes up arms, though really only the ranged attackers can do anything unless the dragon lands on a street or open area. Nevertheless, the folk shout slogans and oaths at the dragons with great gusto. The dragons, for their part, circled about, generally chilling and being the toast of the town, landing on rooftops and such. Finally, the elder dragon landed between the inn and the portal into the courtyard of the Palace of Kings. I was almost out of arrows, and the blacksmith was not interested in business just then, lol, so I ran up and finished the dragon off with my sword.

I looked around for Viinturuth, and saw him land on Calixto’s house. Then he circled around and made a clumsy landing in the Palace courtyard, which was empty at the time, the guards all being in the middle of the city. I ran in and delivered the coup de grace. What happened next was amusing. First came the guards, standing in a group just inside the portal from the outer area, making comments of wonder. Yes, yes, I really am the Dragonborn! Why is that so hard to believe? But then the populace arrived, pushing and shoving for a view of the dragon. Everyone was armed. They stood about like gawkers do, commenting that they'd "never seen anything like it!"

The real surprise, even a shock came next. I looted the corpse and found I was encumbered, and as I was thinking of where I could safely store some of the loot, a courier ran up to me. I thought it might be a letter from “a friend” but I hadn’t yet been to the place he designated. No, it was an inheritance… from http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Silda_the_Unseen. I had always given her a septim every time I passed through Windhelm, and now my generosity was being repaid. I went out to find her body. I found her lying broken between the inn and the Gray Quarter. I picked her up and took her to the graveyard and, by the light of Lydia’s torch, placed her body on one of the empty slabs.

No sooner had I done so than people started arriving, gazing down at her and lamenting the loss. So far as I could tell, she was the only civilian casualty in the attack, the rest being a handful of guards with bad knees. Silda, dressed in rags and armed only with a rusty dagger, bravely defended the only home she knew. Now she’s in Sovngarde.
