So I went ahead and married my companion which had been carrying a ton of good gear for me. As soon as we are married all that gear ends up being FOR SALE to me? WTF?!? So in effect I lost all that gear. Anyway to get it back without paying for it?

I'm not sure, but you might be able to take the gold back if you have him/her as a follower and ask to look through their inventory
