The best places to get Souls

Post » Mon Jun 04, 2012 8:08 am

So I am trying to level my enchanting and conjuration skills. I figure if I can trap about 50 souls and enchant 50 daggers this should do the trick quite nicely. The problem is I am having trouble finding caves/forts/dungeons with creatures in them. I only have one of the Black Star! I've got 50 empty soulgems ready to go. Any ideas? List me what places you know full of creatures off the top of your head and I will find them on the wiki! Thanks!

Any of the barrows would be a place to start as they contain lots of Draugar, this is where I do my soul trapping in anycase.

You might want to think of a Falmer infested dungeon - they die easily and, mostly, have lesser souls. If you want petty souls for cheapo daggers to help with levelling the the plains to the West of Whiterun seem to team with game. However, I think it is possible to hunt them to extinction. The first time I went on a soul hunt in that area there were more mudcrabs than you can shake a stick at, the last time I did not see one and no bears, wolves or sabre-cats either.

One lesson I learned is that grinding enchanting as fast as I could simply got me to the Overpower threshold way quicker.

I now take it slower and grab souls where-ever I can during the course of normal questing. I also buy all the petty soul gems (filled and unfilled) I can, and only once in a while I shuttle between the vendors. I still end up leveling my enchanting pretty fast, even without explicit concentration in it.

i recommend not fast traveling and just running from city to city, there were enough critters for me to soul trap because they spawn around you.

Yep! Rabbits and foxes are a steady source of petty souls. Provided you can run 'em down!

swamp... mudcrabs
river... mudcrabs, deer etc

I farm the above and it doesn't take long to fill a ton of pettys and lows and then i'm off to the enchanter.

If you walk along the coastline you can get a good number of souls from horkers and crabs. You'll get the occasional sabercat and bear too.

This has an added bonus of showcasing the beautiful work of art that is Skyrim's terrain. None of the quest lines take you to the coast for any appreciable length of time, but walking the coast from Winterhold to Solitude is unforgettable.

I don't know if you care about matching the soul to the right soul gem, or if you dont care if a petty soul ends up in a greater soul gem. But for Greater and Grand, I fast travel to all the giant camps. Giants are Gretaer Souls and Mammoths are Grand souls. Dwemer ruins are also really good as most of the automatons will give you filled gems as loot. But for lower levels, All the deer and wolfs around Whiterun, and all the horkers and goats around Windhelm

I'd just go for Dwemer ruins, like stated above, you get filled soulgems from the automatons...

Thanks for all the great suggestions guys. Here's what I ended up doing for anyone that might have had the same question: I went to the skyrim map wiki (type it into google ) and looked at all the caves/forts/etc. It tells you what kind of enemies are in each!
