Book Quest Item - The Last King of the Ayleids - Broken? (X3

Post » Mon Jun 04, 2012 8:27 am

Moving right along... So I picked up from somewhere a book called, _The Last King of the Ayleids_, and it turns out to be a 'quest item' that I cannot remove from my inventory. On top of that there doesn't seem to be any quest line to follow--yet or ever?

The Wiki seems to think the PC has swallowed another bug if the book was picked up before the quest?

The end of the book mentions a place called 'Nenalata' but Wiki research seems to think this was only accessed in Oblivion--not Skyrim--so I'm at a dead end. I don't know the name of the quest or any way to follow up on this item. I think right now it is the only inventory item I can't account for being bugged or not.

Help. Xbox 360!

Thanks.

Hmm. Wasn't that book part of the Umbra questline in Oblivion? Can't remember now, I could probably load an Ob save tomorrow and see what I can find. I haven't run across the book in Skyrim at all yet.

Umbacano comes to mind, but beyond that I know not, for my mind is obscured by the misty fog of days long past.

Ah, really? Well, no wonder I can't remember it then - the only toon I did the college questline is LONG gone now. I have ZERO interest in that whole thing in this game - if I need the stuff (Gauldur amulet mostly) from Saarthal I just use the console to get to Jyrik.

Not much help so far... I assure you we are talking Skyrim. The book is a quest item that I cannot drop from the Book inventory.

Is it really that bad to start the questline?

Why would I bother with all that? I don't do mages, and I don't do the college questline.

Fair enough, but can't you just console yourself the fragment instead of killing Jyrik Ugly-Drauger-Face?

Its a random quest you can do for the librarian at the College. He asks you to find books.
As far as Im aware, the book is not supposed to spawn before you get the quest and Ive read that getting one before the quest may mean you can never turn it in and are stuck with it.

So you can try to see if this was a quest you already have, in which case it shows in the miscellanious section as -Return [book] to [librarian] (some Orc name).

I like killing him. And picking up some loot. And getting the word wall in case I ever decide to start the MQ on anyone again.

Ahh, now I see, your joy of killing is the key.

My toons are universally melee killers, yes. With a bit of left-hand destruction magic as needed.

The use of magic with more might
A foe will know the feeling of fright
Against a master of combat skilled
Most foes will be quickly killed

(Nah, that was just silly of me. It wasn't the best topic for an ode anyway...)

Don't worry about screwing up my thread. It's pretty much confirmed that this is another busted quest item along with several others. I've reached the point where I'm pretty much going to march into the finish and not focus on unfinished quests that don't pertain to the main story. I have the Dragonrend shout, an Elder Scroll and in the middle of taking care of Alduin's Bane.

I'm pretty sure that this was one of the books recovered as a part of the Winterhold college questline...it was one of three to be recovered from a certain place. I wonder if there is another copy somewhere in Skyrim and you happened to find it? IIRC, you have to turn all three in at the college after they are recovered.

Would this be before or after becoming Arch Mage that the PC is now?

The Last King of the Ayelieds has to do with the Umbacano quests, and was written by his rival, something with 'Cinna' at the end. I thought it was nifty they kept it into this game.

There is a quest in Winterhold where Urag gro-Shub asks you to retrieve all kind of old books (already seen in Morrowind and Oblivion). At the beginning of the game I picked up a book from a chest. It was stuck in my inventory with no indications, like yours... Later when I started retrieving books for him I tried to handle that book but no way and he didn't recognize it at all. So now, each time I find a book I drop it first to be quite sure it's not a quest and retake it... Of course I save it before. In case.

The PC has no 'open' quests to recover any books for anyone. And yes, the PC is 'technically' Arch Mage. I would welcome something in the game 'waking up' this quest item I can't otherwise get rid of.
