Having stealtharcher followers equip the right armor?

Hey everyone, I'm a big forum lurker, first post in the Skyrim forums and I just want to throw out amidst all the hating that I and everyone else I know personally thinks this is an amazing game. Now back on topic.

Pretty simple question, does anyone know how to have a follower, Faendal, for example, who is skilled in Archery and Light Armor. However, with every stealthy follower I find, whenever I try to make them my personal pack mule and have them carry heavy armor or a 2H weapon they ALWAYS equip said armor or weapon and will continue to use them in battle forever. It is extremely annoying and detracting from the Stealth aspect of the characters when every time I give a character a 2H weapon or heavy armor they instantly go tank mode and equip it. Does anyone know how to get around this, other than just not giving them the armor? It is extremely annoying to limit my followers to bows, arrows and clothes just so they use their skills properly. I think this is definitely something Bethesda needs to address.

Thanks!

Followers equip the highest rated armor/weapon. I believe it'd based on base damage because I've given enchanted and smithed armor/weapons to mine before and they still revert to lower rated armor/weapons based on what seems to be base rating/damage.
