Whiterun reminds me of Edora's from LotR

Post » Mon Jun 04, 2012 5:15 pm

Decided recently to sit back and watch Lord of the Rings again, well I skipped fellowship of and went to the two towers. I watched the approach to Edora's and I sat back thinking it felt akin to Whiterun. I know it isn't exacts but they feel similar. Any others get that?

It does somewhat. Mabye if it was constructed of more wood than stone it would be closer. Also the castle looks nothing like the great hall.

Edora's is the capitol of Rohan. Agreed, if it was more wood built and on a bigger hill. Still looks awesome either way.

Yeah I thought that the moment I saw Whiterun. It's clearly heavily inspired by Edoras, and the whole hold seems very Rohanish (it's a word).

To me it just looks like an old nordic (Viking) town....

I thought this as well; if your first approach is from the hills north of Riverwood at approximately dusk, it looks almost exactly the same.

On a semi-related note, anyone else ever feel like they're in Moria while raiding a Dwemer ruin?

I gotta ask. I can't help myself.

Why the apostrophe on "Edoras"? Have I been missing out on Memphi's, St. Loui's, Kansa's, Minneapoli's, Beverly Hill's, and Los Angele's all these years?

I'm guessing that they look similar because they are both inspired by the same Viking-like architecture. Not necessarily because Bethesda was inspired by Jackson's LotR movies.

When the LOTR films came out, everyone- EVERYONE- commented on how much the sets, people, and places looked like they had imagined them when reading the book

Not surprising that sword and sorcery games remind folks of the book or the films

The correct adjective is "Rohirric". Tolkien used the form "Rohanese", but it's far less common.

And it Edoras, not Edora's.
