One handed and two handed should be one

Post » Mon Jun 04, 2012 7:06 pm

So I got to thinking about why my character can't hold his greatsword in one hand while in combat, but he can when he's jumping. And I made up an idea, which to me sounds pretty cool. What if you could toogle any sword in the game to be either 1h or 2h? You could do that by equipping your sword in either your left/ right hand making it 1h. If you want it to be 2h then equip it with both hands.

The difference should be that 1h wouldn't be able to break a good enemy block but a 2h sword/mace/axe would. So you would have to give up blocking with a shield for power. You could block with 2h (like now) but with less efficiency.

Of course this would then melt all swords/maces/axes together but it would be kinda cool and I would enjoy this feature.

Anyone agree/disagree? This is just my opinion and I could be way off here

Disagree. Ever try lifting a claymore with one hand? How about swinging it? Those things were *designed* to be used for two hands- to use one one-handed would be like trying to use a sledgehammer one-handed. Yeah, a properly made one weighs only five and a half pounds... but the center is too far off to be used comfortably with one hand.

Furthermore, one-handed weapons typically don't have the space to use it with two-hands effectively. If you tried to use one with two hands, you'd pretty much have a hard time hitting and dealing damage, since you're using it improperly.

I strongly disagree, In Morrowind it wasn't just 1 handed or two, it was pretty much every weapon type. In Oblivion i believe it was Blade,Blunt, hand to hand etc... which i was a little disappointed in. In Skyrim its just One handed and two handed, now you want it to be just 1 handed?

No vote from me.

I'm saying that you could choose between 1 handed or two handed.

You're right about that sir! Didn't think about the weight. As I said, I could be way off here

I ... agree. Perhaps have some weapons take up two hands no matter what though.

And separate them between Blade, Axe, Blunt, and H2H of course.

D&D lets you equip most swords as one-handed or two-handed. There's a feat (perk) to wield any 2-handed weapon in a single hand, but at a decent penalty to hit chance (maybe 40% damage penalty in Skyrim?)

This makes sense. I collect swords, IE real ones. Most are designed with two-handed use in mind, even if they are plenty light enough to use in one hand with a shield. The vast majority of grips have room for both hands. Only the shortest and/or most specialized swords can only be used in one.

P.S. Katanas aren't one-handed weapons, pls fix.

A perk at 100 Two-Handed that would let you hold a two-handed weapon in one hand would be reasonable.

But don't merge the two.

Uh yea, doesnt that mean that there would be no distinguishing between onehanded and two handed? You've sorta merged them into a "weapon" skill

It's not about dumbing down. In my mind it would provide new possibilities. And go play a game if you got nothing constructive to say.

Kinda. If you are using the weapon with one hand it would increase your 1h skill and wield it with two hands would increase your 2h skill. Maybe?

I can see where you are coming from with this thread.if you are a mage you have one handed and two handed in the same destruction perk tree. mages also don't need to worry about heavy and light armour as there robes are all the same weight but they have different levels of enchantment in them.

That would be a better solution, yes.

Yes, exactly. I'm not saying this feature is needed in any way, it's just something I wouldn't mind seeing.

Well I would disagree for the same reasons the people posted above

But, it would be cool to have a Perk for that, Allowing you to put a 2h weapon in 1h Perk, the Perk would give you extra strength to hold it. But that Perk would be at a really high 2h level

Well.
It should require 85 strength to wield a two-handed weapon in one hand.

Oh. Wait.

I think there should only be three skills: magic, fighting, and stealing.

This game is too complex.
