The bookcases are locked in the Arcanaeum

Yeah I know of course with the console commands everything falls into place, but the very fact that you have to use console commands to make the games setting and lore fit together is asinine. It's one of the cardinal sins EVERY MMO commits, where they introduce some grand, epic, radical item or power that the player can obtain, and then crap all over it by introducing an arbitrary set of rules against it that make it unimpressive.

In this case, a mega-super-awesome key that can't open a standard house/gate lock.

Each to her own opinion of course. Personally, I would kill for the rest of the games I play to have the facility to manage stuff the way TES does with the console. If the game as is bothers you so much, perhaps a different game would be more your cup of tea.

Nope. Even with all perks (except keymaster) I still dont see a key on him.

Damn. I should've tried the Skeleton Key before i returned it to Nocturnal.

Correct ... 100 Pickpocket with all Perks shows no key in the pocket of the Librarian.

The Skeleton Key does nothing when a lock Requires a key.

I have not tried the "Unlock" console command yet.

I'm not going to throw away 60 bucks because of one little key, it's just an annoyance. Along with (nearly) every other Daedric artifact that is actually just a terrible or unimpressive weapon/item (exceptions like spellbreaker/ebony mail not withstanding). Yet we're lead to believe the Daedric princes and princesses are practically Gods and wield power beyond comprehension. WoW does it with their higher forge weapons, AoW does it with spearpoints, AEQ does it with cloak ships, even browser games like Runescape do it with Godswords.

Sorry just venting.....

This is called the "Sour Graqes Syndrome". It happens with computer hardware as well as computer software. It usually boils down to cash.

If someone cannot afford to buy a great video card for example, then they make up all kinds of words and phrases that say negative things about people owning a fantastically powerful graphics card, or that one does not really need such a thing, or that software should not be made that requires such a thing. None of those words would ever have been posted or said if such a person saying it was actually given, for free, such a piece of hardware for their very own use. It's the fact that they don't have one to use that makes them say such things.

Same here with this gaming software. Since you can't do it, you say the current state of the software "is asinine". It is true that many players are disappointed with all the bugs. But thank goodness there is a console line command to fix some of it. And you can get the version with the console command line. It is your choice.

Whether it's a powerful graphics card or a weak graphics card; whether it's a Gaming PC or a Gaming Console, you picked it. If you are not happy with what you picked, than you still can make another choice.

Also keep in mind, we all don't drive Ferraris.

OK ... I just tried the "unlock" console command ... it DOES OPEN the locked bookcases in the Arcanaeum. There are a LOT of books inside.

So there must be a key somewhere.

Yep ... No difference between the Skeleton Key and the Unbreakable Lockpick Perk.

And with no Bookcase Key only the console command line opens the Arcanaeum bookcases.

Where is that Arcanaeum Bookcase Key?

Maybe the player is just not meant to open them up and see the books that the devs took the time to store in them. It's there to remind you that some thing you cannot have in life. Sure Beth allowed me to openly fall in love with a lizard person, but some things are out of any one persons grasp.

Found anything special? I doubt. I don't think they're in for the DLC or anything. Or, if they actually are, the DLC books aren't added yet.

I suppose they're there just to add to the library's credibility. Content that's not meant to be reached. Or, Beth might've had some bigger ideas for the library which then got cut to save time. In College of Winterhold, pretty much everything tells that things have been cut there: poor MQ, Arniel Gane's Shade that doesn't talk, many broken quests, Augur of Dunlain, etc.

I remember Urag having a line that he doesn't have an Elder Scroll in the library, and even if he did, that would be in so secure a place that no thief could reach it. This is a reference to Oblivion, but I think there's more irony to it, come to think of it. He could have 10ish bookcases full of Elder Scrolls since no thief could ever get those. (Except Mercer's supreme skills with the Skeleton Key.)

And they're all regular, common books that can be found anywhere.

It's a bookcase. It has books in it.

The rings are in a chest, that, even though it's right there out in the open, you can't find until you walked past it fifty times.

There is no key that I know of.

I did notice (and I can't be positive that this is accurate) that once I started doing the book fetching quests (not the Shalidor's Writings quests) that they slowly started unlocking.

In my game I have at least 6 or 7 of the bookcases that are unlocked now.

Problem is that I can't do anymore of the book quests. I stummbled upon one of the quest books before being sent to find it and now that quest line is broken in my game. he doesn't recognize that I have the book in my possesion already. But I'm pretty sure that continuing to find the books will slowly unlock all of the bookcases.

Yeah, this is what I was thinking happened based on some of the librarian's dialogue. I'm gonna' have to check the bookcases as I complete more of his book fetching quests. :P

Yeah, because i know that ALL of them were locked at 1st and now some are not.

I hope they fix all the "find quest item before recieving quest = broken quest line" problems. it really is quit the bummer.

I know for a fact that they fixed the Onmund's Request one because I had the Staff of Charming before the patch was installed and then as soon as I logged in after the patch I got the message: "Find Enthir's Staff: Completed. Return to Enthir.". :P ...or words to that effect.

Hm. I've never really had a problem with those quests once I find all the items someone needs recovered.

Like Wylandriah (I think I actually spelled that correct, holy sh*t) in Riften.. I found her spoon before meeting her so I never was given the quest by her.

Once I found her other 2 items though, I got a Misc. Obj. update to return to her and everything went along properly.

Yeah, I didn't have any problem with Wylandria's either. I found the ingot in an inn before ever meeting her and thought I was stuck with it forever. But once I found all 3 items, she gave me the dialogue to turn them in to her.

But when I found the book (Chronicles of Nunch....something ) , I thought it was just a skill book and grabbed it not knowing it was a quest item until I tried storing it. The librarian doesn't give me the dialogue to turn it in and I can't get anymore book quests now.

Is there a list of the books to fetch and their locations? maybe if I find them all he'll give me the dialogue to turn them in?

It will probably be part of a DLC and you get the Bookworm Achievment when you open the cases and read all of the books.

Maybe?

20 for "http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Fetch_me_that_Book!"

More than I felt like counting for "http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Shalidor%27s_Insights_%28Quest%29" :P
