The Burglary Job; The Fishing Job etc

Post » Mon Jun 04, 2012 8:07 pm

So I've been doing a fair few of these little quests for Devlin and Vex of the Thieves Guild, and I'm curious as to whether they're just endless filler, with no real end-game, or whether there is an actual payoff. I have completed 12 of them so far- am I wasting my time completing any more? Thanks.

Also, I'm fairly far into the Thieves Guild (I think), having found Gallus's journal and the guild now know about Mercer's betrayal. However, the only merchant in the Thieves Guild seems to be Tonilia, who only has a paltry 1000 or so gold. I heard that there were merchants in the Thieves Guild who had 3000 gold- who are they and when will I encounter them?! Thanks.

I believe if you do five of the jobs in each of the four main cities (excluding Riften, but you still do jobs there) the payoff is a special job in that cities hold that will influence them greatly. There's an even bigger payoff once you have influenced the four cities...

Yes, there is definitely a bigger payoff. You won't get the special jobs though until you have done five "support the Thieves Guild" jobs in each Hold. i.e. 5 for Whiterun, 5 for Solitude, 5 for Windhelm, etc. Riften has their jobs as well, but doesn't count towards a hold.

Five jobs in each of the four main cities- so that's 20 jobs. I've already done 12 of them, so there's at least eight more to complete. Does the game keep track of where you've been, so as to send you to the cities that you need to go to in order for the quests to progress? Or might you end up going to the same city over and over again, potentially having to complete dozens of the quests instead of 20?

It is possible to do the same city over and over... normally, I would save before asking for the jobs, and make sure I have recorded where I have been in each case so I know how many are left in that particular city. Once, I got Whiterun over and over, and was only waiting for the last Markarth job. :stare:

What I did was save before getting the job(s). If they were in towns I had already met my "quota," I'd reload. Yes, this process is tedious but doing the same city over and over is much more so.

You can turn down the job once you've accepted it, then ask for another.

When you get a job from Vex or Delvin and its in a city that you don't want just go back to them and quit out of it. They will moan but there are no actual consequences. Then ask them for another. Repeat until you have two jobs in a city that you want to go to.

When you have done five such jobs in a city Delvin will give you a special for that place. The specials can be good fun and on completion you will get a fence in that city as well as a new relationship with the City guards. For each City brought under the auspices of the Guild all the fences (including Tonila) get an extra 1,000 up to a maximum of 4,000 which replenishes every two days.

Whiterun, Solitude, Markarth, Windhelm

I wrote them down on a piece of paper and ticked them off each job I did, so i knew which jobs I was looking for.

Your questions have basically been answered, but I'll add:
1) The jobs will always continue after you become Guild Master - you need them for something else.
Spoiler
After you do a bunch (100 or so) 'trophies' appear on the shelves in the Cistern.
2) When you quit their jobs they do appear as failed quests in your journal if that matters to you. Which is probably why some people save before they get the jobs from them.

I wrote them down on a piece of paper...
"wrote"? "paper"? What's that? ;)

I had one job left in Solitude and it took about 15 attempts to get it. I kept getting one at Whiterun over and over again... it got quite annoying. By the way, not sure if anyone has mentioned it but you can continue to do these quests after you have completed the 'special' jobs. So, effectively it is endless, but pretty pointless after the 'special' jobs are done. Unless you want some gold... or enjoy them.

Oh, and you can also get jobs in Riften. Even though there is not a 'special' job once you have done 5 there.

Just in case anyone's interested:

The reason you don't get a special job in Riften is that the guild already has special influence there, due to their relationship with Maven Blackbriar.

Also, you can pick your favorite task from their respective laundry lists. You don't have to do all of them. So if you are reasonably sneaky, but a lousy pickpocket, try a numbers job instead of a fishing job, etc. It can be a bit repetitious, but sometimes amusing, too. Like Vex being surprised that an item you stole before somehow ended up in somebody else's house.

A bit? For my money the "twenty quest" series is the worst, bar none, designed elements of the game. The idea that the Guild wants to regain influence in the major cities is fine, the pay off at the end is worthwhile, but the bit in the middle is tedious to the extreme. The first failure is the structure of the dialogue to get a quest - who in their right mind would agree to a job without knowing where it is? Then the jobs themselves are pathetically easy and, save the location and object, identical.

I would bet that the devs were running out of time and took a short-cut in an attempt to add some length to a questline.

That's very true. I wish Delvin would say, "Got a mark in Windhelm with a valuable ring..." then you get the take it or what else options. That would save some considerable time waiting for the engine to laboriously display the objective.

The Dark Brotherhood Forever repeatables are even worse. You have to wait through that long, drawn-out stage whisper boilerplate from the Night Mother and only then does the game update your quest.

On top of getting the fences and getting the city guards in your pockets, you'll also get 3 thieves caches in each of the 5 cities.

These are barrels with shadowmarks on them labelled "Thieves Cache" when you interact with them. They will appear after completing the special job for that city.

They usually have some pretty good leveled gear in them. Top knotch potions, deadric arrows, lockpicks, gems, etc. And they replenish themselves every so often.

Some are pretty easy to find. Some take some searching to find. One particular one in Riften is hard to find.

Only problem is......yep you guessed it........they don't always appear because of yet another glitch. In my game for example, I only got them in Markarth and Riften. The other 3 cities never spawned them for some reason.

I'm still trying to get that damn Gold Jeweled pitcher to show up in the cistern. Got all the rest already (Candlestick, Goblet, Ship, Flaggon, and, Urn.......plus all the larceny items that Delvin bought).
And I've done hundreds of burglary jobs.

Just wondering, do ever get access to the locked vault ever again? Although Delvin and Brynjolf had the keys to open it during the quests, no one has a key to open it now. I'm just wondering if it's still empty or if all the stuff being stolen might be piling up in there.

At 125 jobs I think you also get a golden safe with jewels/coins in it, but I don't know if it re-stocks like the guild master's chest.

A safe? Really? Cool! There's no mention of that in the guide.

Weird, in my prima guide it says the 125 jobs thing right below all the other golden ornaments. But anyway no you can never go into the vault again, sadly.

Yeah, especially when they give you the dialogue about not taking the job. Well, if you tell me what it is ahead of time we could avoid this bit of unpleasantry.

I was always afraid to go near it for fear of the members attacking me since emptying it was one of Mercer's most vile offenses to the Guild.

Yes, I read the subsequent post that says we don't get access to it.
