Crashing on entering certain locations

Post » Tue Jun 05, 2012 2:44 pm

I've been playing Skyrim for two weeks now and I completed it. So there are some situations where I'm stuck because of crashes to desktop. I know that they are caused by entering locations like: Riverwood (Following Ralof there), exiting Darkwater Crossing Mine (after completeing Hired Thug quest there). I tried to load earlier saves and approaching these places differently or even starting a new game but neither of these helped.
There is also one more thing. There are NO Khajiit marriage candidates, male or female. There also seems to be no High Elves to be married.
Also I've run into some graphical glitches. These are: disappearing water surface, walls, props and even some NPCs. I also encountered two critical glitches, which cover the whole screen with colors like red yellow and green, alters color pallete to these colors and slows the game to a crawl. However these happened to me only twice and mostly in dungeons. I can't even start the game! Please, help me.

Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit (6.1, 7600)
Intel Core i3 3.07 GHz (4CPUs)
4096MB RAM
DirectX 11
Nvidia GeForce 450

I have all newest drivers and updates up to this day

Sadly, you just got to deal with it, I know it svcks, I get it a lot. But I assure you Bethesda is working out the kinks.

I'm getting this frequently now. Like, anything from immediately starting the game (once in the game, not in the menu), to where I can play for an hour. Typically I'm getting 10-20 minutes of game time before I have to exit and restart. Highly annoying.

The weird thing is, it only started once I installed a "new" 285GTX card (which worked flawlessly on a Win7 64 bit system without issues). I have WinXP Pro SP3, but while my old 9800GTX card was still operational, I never had these issues. It definitely feels like DirectX is bugging out, probably aided by the games commands to it. Yes, I installed new gfx drivers cleanly :)

My symptoms: Game totally freezes for 5-15 seconds, and when it comes back graphics is all messes up with crazy textures and sizes where they don't belong, and some fonts totally screwed up. Usually I can see the Yes/No buttons in dialogs, but the text is garbled. I only get to exit cleanly because I know the quit button is at the bottom, and to desktop is at the bottom, and that I can see what line I'm selecting even if I can't read it.

Most of those aren't game issues as far as I can tell, to me it sounds like overheating (at least Hoblaks issue).

The OP's graphical issue I had at some point as well, I assume it's some kind of memory leak I only got it after playing for hours.

I haven't experienced it since I started to use the latest beta drivers though.

OP, suggest going to the Hardware/Software forum, which is broken down by platform, and ask in there. You'll probably get more help there.

Good luck.

Unlikely, as it can also happens right after a cold system start. And I don't experience it in other games. I've seen it long time ago though, and it appeared to be caused by memory leak and/or insufficient memory on the graphics board. Considering this is a newer card than I had, with more memory (I am upping to high on textures though, but rest is still fairly low), with temperatures looking okay, I'm more and more convinced it's a DirectX related problem wrt memory handling.

Most likely its mod related. Did you install any texture mods?
