People always talk about hiding in the shadows and stuff, but is it really like that in Skyrim. Are you harder to detect when you're standing in a dark spot than if you're in the light? I havn't noticed any difference myself so I thought I'd ask.

Yes.

no its not, its is as simple as crouch and be out of the line of sight which usually is against a corner or wall which is usually where it is darkest in the room. All that matters is your sneak level mainly armor level (light vs heavy light is best)

Things that determine if you are detected or not while sneaking:

- Line of sight
- sound generated
- weight of boots
- sneak skill
- light level.

So the answer is yes.

I've tested this plenty of times.

Have had mobs walk right up to me in dark corridors, while I'm crouched directly in LoS.
The only thing keeping me hidden is the darkness.

Try the same thing in a well lit area or pull out a torch and they spot me straight away.

So yes light levels modify chance to be detected.
It's a pretty basic stealth mechanic in games these days.
