Loving the AI - Epic Battle

Post » Tue Jun 05, 2012 7:23 am

The AI is just amazing and I'm just loving it. I'm having the best time. I was doing the quest for the Staff of Magnus and fighting Morokei. I thought my best weapon was the Staff of Fireballs but Lydia got in the way and died and after the reload, I had her wait just inside the door to the Morokei chamber and then shut the door so she wouldn't follow me. I took care of the thralls and then the fight with Morokei was really tough. I'd take his health down with a couple hits of the Staff of Fireballs but he kept killing me with the Staff of Magnus.

After a few+ tries, I used an invisibility spell to move away from where I was and then armed with the Drainspell sword, I got close enough to him that hitting him with that was working. He wouldn't die though! I just kept swinging at him since I had a few of those swords and they'd absorb stamina and when his health was finally down to a dot, I'm thinking, die, you have to die now! Right at that point, Lydia ran out of the door and finished him off. We had fought our way near to that door where she was and she came out and protected me with her life. :) I just love this game and that was an epic fight I'll never forget. Thank you, Bethesda devs...it was awesome. :tes:

What level was your character? I agree, that was one of the best battles my Redguard mage has had. She put Lydia in a different room for the same reason. Tried to use magic then sword to win, but died in the last few points of Morokei's life. Reloaded and went with magic and arrows which eventually worked.

Just had a fun battle with my low level Bosmer archer at Fort Kastav. She parked Jenassa back a distance to avoid death. Kept recasting a flame atronach to divert (and cause) damage, while she pinned the mages with arrows. In the last moments, Jenassa ran up and looted an ice spike staff from one of the downed mages and layed down spikes to cover my archer.

Ysabel Maro, Imperial battlemage, was at level 27 for Morokei. I occasionally find a staff in Lydia's inventory that I know I didn't give her and that's another part of the AI I think is great. Now if they could only find a sackful of filled soul gems. I haven't done Fort Kastav yet but have fought them as we're passing by. I know that one's going to be huge too. Argis will probably be with me then because his health is so much higher. :tes:

For me it was a waste of space. Morokei just floated in the air close to the pool taking damage. Even so it must have taken 20 firebolts to down him.

What he is like in full fight mode, awesome I imagine

I've had NPCs glitch like that. Occasionally something just doesn't render...you can reload and it should be ok though. Yes, Morokei is very tough because he has the Staff of Magnus and a spell that will hurt you bad if you try to conjure a helper. It takes some strategizing to overcome what he's doing but you really are provided with everything you need when you make your way through the ruin. You just have to figure out what to use where and when. I died a lot. :tes:

I love the AI too, and not just because of the way random circumstances can come together to form a great battle or situation. I often find myself amused by things that occur which are clearly bad AI as well. For example, last night I was exploring up in the frigid snowy region and noticed that there were two trolls quite some distance ahead of me. They were both chasing something other than me, so I made sure to keep a low profile and pursued them. This went on for almost fifteen minutes as they both chased foxes, rabbits, wolves, and goats. I kept laughing because they'd kill a creature, beat their chests, and then race after another.

Lydiasmate - I hear what you're saying. Like Kicenna said, I found that rushing in and getting a sword on the priest (or arrows) was effective (but hard). The priest moves quickly. I did not find spell casting to be useful, but that may have been because my mage was around level 20 at the time. She died a lot until a good solution was found

Did any of you pick up the magic weapons dropped by the Draugr?

they make the fight so much easier.

Eh. Snuck up on Morokei, one shotted him with a pair of daggers.

I just stood next to his force bubble and ordered my follower to kill the thralls. As soon as the bubble came down, BAM, dead dragon priest.

Brilliant strategy, just briliant. It doesn't give you the epic battle but it gets the job done. :)

theKarnage, that's one of the things I was talking about that they really provide you with everything you need as you're going through the ruin. Those weapons and getting in close to him lessens Morokei's power in a huge way with him using the Staff of Magnus on you. I think that's a battle to try a lot of different strategies with and I'll have to think about it for next time from everyone's tips. That's one of my favorite quests. :tes:

When I did this one my character was a high sneak and dagger type. I crept up behind each of the the chaps keeping the bubble in place and silently knifed them. This released Morokei but he did n't spot me. Then I crept back towards the entrance and up to him. The daggers blurred and he was dead. Satisfying in its way but certainly not the epic battle that Kicenna had to face, then I suppose avoiding battle is what being a sneaky type is all about.

Morokei was my toughest fight so far. I was level 17 or so. I used up a lot of my potions and would have had to given up if I did not find the spell that changes health to magika. I was in no hurry to kill Morokei and Lydia must have gotten down on her knees a couple of times during the fight. Once I found out that you did not need to be near her to heal her, I was able to heal her up and watch her run up the stairs and finish off the priest. I liked her dialogue when she went after him. She sounded like she was really mad.

This precisely. I slipped up and ganked both of the mages then slinked up to take him out too. They literally never knew what hit them. I looted the body, saw that it was a named mask and thought, "Oh, he was one of them named dragonpriests? Cool. Like Krosis's mask better though. Makes me look more like Dr. Doom."

I'm loving the Ai (most of the time) as well. If only they would climb or jump up small obstacles! The big thing for me was getting ruined by the first wisp mother i ever met,I was on horseback,it attacked,I got off,the horse got hit and bolted,I got closed down, was wedged in between a rock and a tree and just about to die then...in comes the horse, swinging hoof,I get some breathing space but the horse dies. Windhelm isn't far away, nor is the river but I have to give a proper go at hurting this thing, for the horse. Stuck with it,longest, most drawn out fight of the game to this day for me,running, ducking, trying to figure out what worked, what hurt it,getting too brave at wrong times and frozen slow as the shades came in on open ground, really lucky they are so much weaker than the mother, which i didn't know at the time. Jammed it really but wouldn't have lasted beyond the first skirmish if it hadn't been for a horse I'd only had for ten minutes, was still classified as stolen, and I never even got to name.

The Morokei fight,oh,I thought we were going to be destroyed, but the lay out of the place helped us,Marcurio was stuck behind a pillar when Morokei was released,so we got him in a pincher movement and used the architecture to our advantage. We'd already been surprised by Krosis somewhere else before and wrecked,so I think the best bet against these guys is to stay apart and use each other as a distraction, getting both of you out in one piece is half the fun for me,especially if your buddy is most likely to go down in friendly fire.

This is something I've observed. Followers can be expected to have various arrows in their inventories, of course, but picking up a weapon off a corpse is surprising. It only seems to be staves, though. I've also left followers in a place to keep them from jumping into the fray, only to have them dash out to deal a blow, then return to their station.

Wasn't my my first dragon priest. I knew once he started scooting all over that maze of a room, blasting me with magic, I'd be toast (or at least use up a lot of potions).

The time earlier where I killed a dragon, only to have a dragon priest pop out of what I'd assumed was a treasure container as I was catching my breath and start zipping around like an amped up icewraith... that was enough "epic" to teach me not to let Morikei break into his "scoot and shoot" routine.
