Suggestions to make Skyrim better

Post » Tue Jun 05, 2012 1:41 pm

First of all i apologize if this is the kind of thread that's been read over and over but i am compelled to write down some suggestions of mine that could work. Skyrim is an incredible game. Despite the various bugs and glitches, that are being corrected as we speak (i want to believe this is true), i cannot imagine the huge amount of time dedicated to the creation of such a masterpiece.

Any case, to the point:

A new profession: Cooking

We all like to spend time leveling our professions but i never understood why there's no specialization in cooking. We can make food, that much is right, but everyone can make the same food. Just as alchemy, enchanting and smithing, we should gain from specializing in cooking. Better food, better and longer bonuses and more magicka/health/stamina replenishes. Maybe through perks we could gain other bonuses too? It makes sense for me that a good cook can make MORE food out of the same ingredients for example. Imagine the potential of being a cook role-play wise, in a game where you can be whatever you want to be. Would be nice to be able to cook for your wife instead and gain additional dialogue options?

Dressing/gearing up your companions: You should be able to dress/gear up your companions or your wife the way you like

Why not? Why can't i simply give my wife a nice looking dress so she can put it on always? I married a miner, i think her name is Sylgja if i remember right and it's frustrating for me that she walks around the house with her pickaxe and a rather poor outfit!

Another thing that got my attention is that you can only improve your companion's gear with better items. You can't really downgrade for the sake of looks, which in my opinion, is wrong. You should be able to equip your companion without restrictions. I would love to see Lydia wearing forsworn armor for example. Why can't she, is she too shy for that?

Item equipping: Rings

We have 2 hands and 10 fingers. Why on earth can we only equip 1 ring? It's not that they're heavy! Yes... yes, i know you will probably tell me "but that would make your character even more OP", well perhaps making it even more difficult for us to play (i am already playing in Master), or by evenly splitting up bonuses. Either way, i wish i could wear a second ring. Be it for looks, for role-play or just to be better equipped.

Naming: Your Horse

We should be able to name our horses, like we could in LOTRO for example. It would create a stronger empathy between you and your loyal and unyielding horse.

Bindings: Yet more bindings

Am i the only one thinking that 1-8 key shortcuts are just not enough? That we spend too much time pausing the game because we want to select something from our favorites? I'm playing a mage too and the spell list is so vast now i end up pausing quite oftenly.

These were my 2 cents. What are yours?
Merry Christmas Bethesda and everyone else.

I forgot this one!

Exploring: Creating/Adding reminder lines on your map

I often pass by certain locations on the map that i don't want to enter yet. Take a dungeon for example. I could write on the map above the dungeon marker something like "I haven't explored these ruins yet" or "To be explored".

Gear Customization:

If I craft a piece of gear, be it weapon, armor, or jewelry, give me at least three different models to choose from so my gear can be somewhat unique.

And then let me choose the color for it. I feel absolutely stupid playing a Dark Elf Assassin wearing the brown Thieves' Guild armor body.

Also, let me have a damn cloak to hide my identity, an earring, and at least one bracelet. Let me making effing Jarlaxle from the Drizzt saga if I want to.

YES!!! this is an rpg I want customization options to for instance I love daedric armor and weapons but what if someone likes steel? there should be an option to have steel weapons and armor at daedric quality if I want to also I really like shrouded hood and shrouded robes yet theres no unenchanted versions!!! mages crafting skill is enchanting yet half of our robes are already enchanted there's only THREE unenchanted robes and ONE unenchanted hood in the game

you can already do that with the combined effects of enchanting alchemy and smithing, but i know what you mean i have a hunting bow that is as good as an ebony bow (ledendary) and thats just from buying potions and enchanted gear for improving smithing by around 50-60%

I have to agree with you there. Would be nice to make your own arrows.

As to the hardcoe mode i feel you. I'm playing Master with my Sparta warrior and it's all too easy.

How about just better balance and much better writing? My biggest gripe with this game is STILL the POS faction questlines. Everything else is acceptable or in some cases mind blowing.

This kind of game does have limitations though. So please, sacrifice a few things and improve the writing. 50-60 voice actors would be a good start. The Voice acting is STILL terrible and the dialogue is riddled with bugs, lines that make no sense(NPC skill remarks about skills you have at very low levels for instance, they claim you are very good at them? Wtf?), other lines that repeat themselves unnecessarily, some lines are even inappropriate for the setting(after completing a favor for one of the orc strongholds http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/648747634086719654/2131AC53383840F54D13256D59CC5FEEDAD3652D/ happens, really? Lol). If you are going to have 70 voice actors at least have them use some variation between different characters. Then again I am sure it is a nightmare to do so. So if that fails. Go back to text boxes and toss out most of the dialogue and stop catering to the least common denominator. /rant

Sound familiar? Typical really devoted fan rant.

Hotkey equipment sets. So you can switch entire sets with the press of a key. I have several different rings and amulets etc. that go with the different styles I use (combat/archery mainly) and it'd be really neat if I could switch in the blink of an eye rather than having to go to the favorites menu all the time. It's not too bad but just to make life easier.

A couple of my main critiques would be:
- add in consequences to the game world. Choice and consequences of those choices are the key to an RPG experience. As fun as Skyrim to play it lacks a real rewarding experience because nothing in the game world really changes no matter what it is that you do.

- You are already using separate cells for big cities....why not actually make them feel city like? I mean Whiterun is THE primary trading hub of Skyrim and there are what 30 people that live there?

- magic.... I won't go into the vast amounts of improvements needed here, but seriously... Is magic disappearing from Nirn or something?

i have LOTS of favorited things in my quick menu and scrolling through them is becoming a pain. For PC users, what if when i open my quick menu, if i press a letter key on my keyboard it zooms me to the first item in my quick menu starting with that letter.

For example: if im down the bottom of my list and i want 'Detect Life', instead of scrolling up all i do is press the 'd' key on my keyboard and bam! your selector is at the first item starting with 'D' in the menu.

Of course hotkeys will probably need to be disabled to allow this to work for the time the quick menu is open, but this would help a LOT!

-Fix the glitches (not every last one, but the major annoying ones)
-Give us a quest difficulty meter (some quests are have enemies set at a certain level, please tell us when....)
-Try to give us quests in difficulty order (don't give us the hard quests at the beginning)

Bring back spell creation.
Give us the older spell types as well.

Then polish out the bugs.

Then I would like more factions.
The factions some not all should have choice and consequences.
I would like about half to be choice and consequence, I would like the other half to be as is.

smithing redone so it is more fulfilling and you can see, for example the difference between regular and legendary armor

spellmaking and more spells-open locks, actual invisibility-in general more variety

characters that all have at least a little bit of unique character-especially the guards who are all the same adventurer who took and arrow to the knee and would be a lot warmer and a lot happier with a belly full of mead

daedric artifacts and special quest items should be better than those you can forge and enchant-it also somewhat dissapointing when a unique item has a huge builup but really isnt all that good-the Gauldur amulet for instance

Me too! When Todd mentioned the hotkeying, I thought for sure we'd be able to switch sets. It wouldn't be hard to implement because of lack of buttons since they could make it so you had to press the "A"-button simultaneously while pressing the D-pad (any direction, a total of 8). Or perhaps you had to go into your favorites first, then use a button not used in that interface, the RB-button for example. It goes along with their principle too - you know, they try to encourage people more than ever to have a diverse style and try different strategies this time.

first, better writing. i know the story is cliche and i'm ok with that, but it doesn't mean it can't be told in an entertaining way.

better combat. while skyrim is far and away better than oblivion, it still is pretty poor.

better characters. there's maybe a handful of characters i actually care about and enjoyed listening too. but i can't really think of one right now lol. guess that says it all.

give me different ways of finishing quests (mostly applies to guilds and MQ). example, there's a speech skill, but there is nothing in the guilds or MQ that uses a speech check. this is the cornerstone of role play; being able to finish/complete tasks in a variety of ways.

these are the reasons i can play new vegas ad nauseum. fantastic writing (especially for Fantastic), memorable characters at every turn, and great flexibility to finish quests. not to mention four endings and the ability to talk down the biggest boss in the game. bethesda just hire obisidian's writers already. or fire your editors. or fire the people who pick what stories to use. y'all have to do something, because oblivion, FO3, and skyrim have horrible stories and characters.

No more ice pikes, fire balls and other really over powered spells which spoils the game.
