10 More Ways To Improve Skyrim

Post » Tue Jun 05, 2012 5:38 am

Ok, some of these are nit picks and some are more pie-in-the-sky. In no particular order.

1. Add Minigames to Combat
Those who are familiar with the God of War series will know what I mean. Basically, this is a combat enhancer that will go to 3rd person view and use animated sequences of combat where you have to react by hitting certain buttons at certain points to complete breathtaking maneuvers you otherwise would not be able to do. Adds to realism, immersion and cool factor.

2. Make Dialog Choices Matter
Look at games like L.A. Noire that have taken dialog selection to a new level. Not in all cases, but in places where the narrative can fork in different directions depending on your choices, allow the player to succeed or fail depending on their responses. Succeeding may involve choosing many paths through the dialog with no single choice of failure, but makes the player think carefully about the expected response.

3. Destructible Environments
If I want to chop down a tree, let me! Other things include shooting fireballs at wooden scaffolds and having them fall apart. If that means you are blocked from a path. So be it!

4. Add Faction Reputations
As from Fallout New Vegas.

5. Better lip sync and walking animation
L.A. Noire sets the new standard for this. Everything else seems 10 years dated in comparison. When I see mobs walking down stairs using the same animation as walking on a road, it looks ridiculous.

6. Why does my quiver have to float off my back by 10 inches?
This is extremely annoying. Bad enough I can't view my character portrait, but when I gander at my arrow quiver on my back from the side, it literally floats in the air...

7. Rewards/Loot Should Scale
Ok, I like the direction skyrim took on monster scaling vs. Oblivion. But when I am getting rewards for cleaning bandit camps like (100gp) or a weapon that is worse than what I have, its disheartening. There should be a treasure generation system that takes into count what you already have. If I can't find or get improvements to my gear, half the game is lost for me.

8. Better Lighting
This has been mentioned before. The whole dungeon "faux lighting" is kind of cheesy. Yes, I know being in the dark is worse, but there has to be a better way.

9. More Better Voice overs
I'm getting a little bored of every NPC sounding like Arnold. Accents are a nice addition, but am I stuck in Austria? Also, when my character gets hit, all he says is "Ahhhhhh!" Doesn't matter if its a tiny spider or a dragon.....just "Ahhhhhh!" Some other kinds of grunts and umphs would be appropriate.

10. Talking Characters
This may be a divided issue, but I would like to hear my characters voice in conversations. The mute character style is boring to me. Bioware changed over from it in Mass Effect. Hearing your voice is better.

Byes!!

1. Oh Jesus Christ no! Please for the love of all things holy... Just no. All of them are just "Push button or you lose." How about some REAL combat?
2. Agreed. More dialog and dialog that matters. I shouldn't
Spoiler
be given the option to decline being leader of the Thieve's Guild
for the NPC I'm talking to to say "Lol too bad cause you are now."
3. Of course I want it, but I also understand the limitations of the game and the engine and how fully or even partially destructible environments would hinder the game.
4. Agreed. I should be able to do some minor things to help a faction out and have them like me for it. Also, joining one faction should make another dislike me.
5. Agreed but mocap and lip sync takes a tone of time and money. And let's not forget that the LA Noire motion capture system was hailed as a technological marvel, one of the first of it's kind for games. It will come to be mainstream over time.
6. Yeah, there should be some way to have it offset by what you are wearing but a minor graphical bug isn't a big deal to me.
7. I dislike the idea of generic reward scaling. I don't expect the Jarl to just check all my gear and grab something from his vault that is superior to what I have. I would like the gold to scale though.
8. Of course. Although I don't have a problem with how it is you can't really argue against a "This should be better" arguement.
9. Some more reactions to pain would be nice, as would more voice actors. But that takes a lot of time, money, and disk space.
10. I don't like this idea at all. Looking back at number 9, how would you like it if no matter how many Nord's you make, they all sounded exactly the same. Better to fill in the voice yourself imo.

I suppose I could add my own too...

1. The ability to poison both my weapons without changing them (This may be a stupid thing to say, I'm not sure I've tried just clicking the poison with the other mouse button)
2. The ability to drop quests
3. Less than exact quest markers (Telling me that a Golden Claw was stolen should point me to the entrance of the cave, leaving me to do the rest of the work)
4. The option to not lead the guilds after the quest line is done
5. Spellmaking
6. More gear customization (idc if I can't enchant them and if they have no armor, give me my separate Pauldrons)
7. Dialog that doesn't repeatedly loop (I know you work for Belethor already damn it!)
8. More choices in quests
9. Hand to Hand a viable option
10. Fix any and all exploits.

1. Shadow rendering fix
2. Data fixes all around
3. Implement a real journal
4. Abandon quest feature
5. Spell making
6. Destruction damage scaling
7. NPC's with varied dialouge
8. Followers that don't revert back to their default gear
9. Damage buff to all Dragons
10. Longer guild storylines

That's my two Septims worth.

1. I don't think this is a good idea. TES games are not action games, and I feel like this installment is the best they've done with combat thus far. I would like to see a VATS system implemented as an archery perk, using stamina as a resource. I would also like to see a wider variety of finishing moves.

2. Yes, yes, and yes. This is my biggest gripe with Skyrim thus far-- the dialog options aren't only limited, but your choices really don't matter. Even a throwback to Baldur's Gate would suffice-- have a good, neutral, and evil option for every dialog. Even if this meant striking most of the voice acting and replacing it with text it would be worth it.

3. This is asking a lot for a game as huge as Skyrim. Every time you manipulate something in the world it would add to the save file size, so destructible enviornments... yikes. Maybe Elder Scrolls 6 or 7... :)

4. Yes. Yes. Yes. Love this idea. Even racial reputations would be awesome.

5. Bethesda has always made their walking/running/jumping animations goofy as hell, Skyrim is worlds better than Morrowind and Oblivion but I agree they can be much improved.

6. Agreed.

7. Agreed.

8. I actually looove the lighting and shadows in Skyrim, but mods will give players more options.

9. Agreed.

10. Again, they could throw back to Baldur's Gate, where your character did have a voice and you selected their voice at character creation. Decent idea.

With regards to my #1, consider this. Already there are battle animations (for my assassin, they are killing blow cutscenes). So what I'm saying is, at certain combat moments, perhaps even rare, allow these cinematic cutscenes, but rather than being non-interactive (as they are now) add a couple of interactive options to have a glorious kill sequence. Its already moving that direction and I really like the kill animations. Have you seen the dragon one?!? its awesome, but I just sit and watch and can't interact.

1. Add Minigames to Combat
Absolutely not. The finishing moves are good enough.

2. Make Dialog Choices Matter
It could be improved yes.

3. Destructible Environments
Engine limitations. Can't be done.

4. Add Faction Reputations
Yes.

5. Better lip sync and walking animation
There are different animations for climbing stairs they just don't trigger always. Look at the Dragonsreach stairway in Whiterun, it works there.

6. Why does my quiver have to float off my back by 10 inches?
Mods can fix it.

7. Rewards/Loot Should Scale
Could be improved yes.

8. Better Lighting
I have a darker nights and interiors mod installed that makes nights and dungeons look gorgeous. It's like a totally different game.

9. More Better Voice overs
Voice overs cost too much time and money. I'd prefer a complete text based game.

10. Talking Characters
Nope. This is no Mass Effect.

There you go: http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=648#content

It also removes the grey tint of everything in the game

1-Never...but never
2-Agreed,but bethseda addimited they didn't had the time to add that
3-If skyrim was turned into a Vox game even an AlienWare wouldn't be capble of playing it,but falling trees would be cool.
4-Agreed,i'm tired of having to pass from Forsworn camps/fotress
5-Ok
6-Ok
7-You can find chests on almost all dungeons, and the items inside respawn after sometime(of course with diferrent stuff...so just wait).
8-Never had a problem.But i can see that on xbox 360 and Ps3 gameplays,so i agree
9-Yeah,some npcs have ridiculous voices.Such as bards...c'mon the voicers should be real singers.
10-All tes games have that,so it doesn't botter me.
