There's dozens of followers players can choose from, but I only ever used Lydia apart from the few times where quests involved being accompanied by someone else, such as for example, Farkas of the companions or Mercer Frey of the TG.

If Lydia thought she was about to die, she would sometimes come out with an almost heartbreaking melodramatic line in a low pitched pained voice of "Not...Like... This.." , a quite sad thing to hear as I never want my Lydia to meet her maker and go to Sovngarde, and I'd always rush to heal her if it wasn't too late.
