Overwrites your autosaves, yes. Not your manual saves.

As long as you have manually saved your old one at least once then it will not overwrite it. Just make sure when you save your new file that you do not click on your old one when saving.

It is perfectly fine to have more than one character.

Your first character will be save number 001 then say you have been playing with this character and have been saving your progress as you go in the game and your most recent save is numbered 150. You then decide to start a new character so once you create your new character and decide to make your first save with your new character then that save will be numbered 151 in your save list. So old character is still save 150 and new character will be 151. Just don't overwrite your old character saves with your new character saves.
