Dunmer voices are so daft - my only let down in the game

Post » Tue Jun 05, 2012 4:00 pm

Someone else mentioned it briefly in a different thread but I gotta agree that the Dunmer sound so daft in Skyrim.

All the new races look totally bad ass but the voices for the Dunmer are so lame.

Anyone thought this?

The Redguards and Imperials sound cool. The Nords sound cool as do the Bretons. The Khajiit sound good. The Orsmer sound great.

Personally I'd prefer to hear the Elven races (except perhaps the Orsmer) to have a more oriental sounding accent to make them sound more culturally different and interesting.

There are a few different voices for each race. I think they sound alright to be honest, much better than Oblivion.

Morrowind's Dunmer "I'm a heavy smoker" voice really got annoying after a while.

They were heavy smokers.

Of ash.

The thing that annoyed me about Dunmer voices was the fact that they sounded so... regional, and that region didn't fit in with their real life comparison, partially because they didn't have a concrete one, unlike the Scandinavian Nords. Same with the Redguardsl; in previous games they all sounded like black americans, now their accents are all over the place.

Sorry, I'm really a fan of Lani Minella. Maybe she'd have been better voicing Altmer, since that British I'm-so-much-better-than-you fits them better, but I do approve of that.
Spoiler
And Ivy is awesome
Males, on the other hand... I have to say I preferred Morrowind's. The one I see as odd are Male argonians...with the females sounding so inhuman and the males not.

I do approve of each race having different voices, though. It got weird in Oblivion when I heard a Nord behind me and turned to face an orc.

The heavy smoker voice was a lot better than the so-called Australian accent they suddenly have now. Maybe the air in Skyrim is just more pure of volcanic ash, but still you can't beat this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqHrpcOcLBE

Not all of them. For example, the British sounding guy outside Windhelm (or the one on his way to join the Imperials) has a pretty deep voice.

I'm actually not into the Redguard voices very much. Aside from that one dude in the Dark Brotherhood; they all sound like Bretons or Imperials to me. Maybe I was hoping for something a bit too exotic, even though we're talking about one of the youngest peoples in Tamriel.

I like Dunmer voices though. I think matches their "fallen" state as a race.

'Ello dere, Oi am dike Van Doike, and Oi ahm rehpresentin' the Duuhnma in Skoyrim.

Yes I'm in agreement, the dark elves with the mockney accents are awful. There are a couple which have rough voices though iirc? Or were those just placeholders. I haven't paid much attention to the greyskins since I've been playing.

All I can say is that I deeply miss the heavy smoker voice of Morrowind- I absolutely loved hearing it after coming back from an adventure.
I mean it was just so full of grizzled passive-aggressive tones and depending on dialogue could feel demeaning or even respectful.

One of the reasons I loved to take Charon around with me in Fallout 3 was because it felt like I was taking a bit of Morrowind with me, wherever I went.
