The main focus is the quasi-Freudian theory that people use video games as an outlet to act out - via avatar - their inner desires, and hidden morals and beliefs without fear of social or societal judgement or ostracization

Sorry for bypassing your questionnaire, but I did find this part interesting and I just have a brief comment on it for what it's worth as anecdotal evidence. But I think that your statement is more true for younger gamers and less true for older gamers.

I think younger gamers are more interested with exploring morality, and less concerned with adhering to societal rules while playing a game. And trend more slightly towards morally ambigious "cool" characters. Whereas older gamers already have gone over all this morality stuff already and have a firm idea in their head about right and wrong. And so trend towards characters with the same morality as they have in real life (lawful characters) as most of us are generally lawful good people.

My own experience followed that trend, I've been playing rpgs for maybe 20 years, and I always had fun playing neutral evil characters. Then I spent awhile playing true neutrall as I got older, and in the last few years I've been unable to identify with characters who weren't lawful good. Coincidentally in the last few years I've been heavily studying/debating about culture, morality, politics, religion etc. So I can't help wondering if studying society as a whole has changed the way I play games where you can completely ignore morality.

I try to avoid my philosophical views and roleplay my characters from their own personality. I try to create unique and diverse individuals with separate beliefs and ambitions different from my thoughts.

That is the joy of TES for me its another world another life I can experience. I create my own ramifications and live by that when I roleplay.

Approximate Age: 28ish
Race: Nord
Gender: Female
Aptitude(Stealth, Combat, Magic, or mixed?): Melee Combat (one-handed - dual wield)
Top 10 Major Skills:One-handed, light armor, archery, smithing, alchemy, Speech, Sneak, Lockpicking, Enchanting, Restoration
Criminal History: one murder and one or two assaults
Allegiances: Stormcloaks
Factions: Mages College, Nightingales, Thieves Guild, Companions, Dark Brotherhood

Horseback or on foot?: on Foot (before Shadowmere) on horseback (after getting Shadowmere)

Do you spend more time in towns/villages/cities, or adventuring/questing/wandering the wild?: Questing - I visit towns when I need to trade

Do you organize and/or manage your inventories at homes?: Yes, I try to get home, store/sort what I need, then hit the shops and go back to questing.

Do you keep items that you never plan on using: Yes, you never know, they might come in handy. If I run around with it for weeks though, I might just sell/drop it.

Do you pay attention to encumberment on a regular basis?: No

Priorities(Gold, loot, quests, relationships, etc.)? Relationship would be my first answer, but unfortunately, you really don't get much out of your partner, other than, "Hello love, back from an adventure I guess?" lol So, yea, quests are my priority. When I start a new character it's gaining gold, so I can get better equipment and potions.

How do you get what you want from a NPC?: The gentle persuasion tactic or bribery. I rarely intimidate anyone.

A lone friendly traveler is encountered in the wild, how do you approach him/her?: With a smile on my lips and a helping hand.

The same lone traveler is non-threatening, yet hostile(possibly of another allegiance or faction)?: Depends on how I feel. Might just kill that Imperial Scum lol

Does apparel/armor aesthetics, practicality, value, or rarity determine use?: Sure, looks go a long way, but I'm more concerned on practicality. How will it protect me during a fight?

Do you prefer purchasing equipment or finding/looting/stealing/discovering for use: I like to craft my own gear

Do you learn more about your quests, NPCs, and faction before undertaking quests? Yes, I try to find out what I'm dealing with. It might conflict with my REAL believes at times, but then I remind myself it's a game and I want to experience every aspect of it, at least during my first play through. I might be more choosy or choose a different route during my 2nd play through.

Do allegiances, morals and beliefs, or other factors determine who you work for/with and the tasks you perform: If your actions would bring on a stronger response or had more consequences on how other NPCs treat your character, yes, I think it would make more sense to really think about your actions. But in the current state, it doesn't really matter what you do. Personally, since I chose the Stormcloaks, yes, I probably won't work with Imperial Soldiers. lol

When you have companions, do you let them do most of the work: No, it's usually the other way around. I try to protect them. I use them as backup.

Do you equip them with improved equipment, or let them use what they have?: Yes, all the companions I use leave my service with better gear. I hand craft better armor and weapons for them.

Do you have them carry most of your burden(ex. loot, weapons, armor, etc.)?: No, we split the loot. I carry my share.

Does it bother you when NPCs say bad things about you: Yes, they should show more respect! lol

If any of those NPCs were to travel outside of civilization, what would you do, if anything: I wouldn't hunt them down, since they are just following a script LOL

Do you give up on difficult quests? Do you plan better for a new approach? Do you see it through, no matter how difficult?: Once I start something, I will finish it. I might go to the forums to get a tip on how to proceed, should I be stuck on a certain quest. I hate that there are a few glitched quests and they are now stuck in my quest log!

Do you interact with NPCs other than for essential needs, wants, or tasks?: Yes, I talk to my husband and try to talk to my housecarls, should I visit my various homes lol

Do you lie - when it is an option - to receive a greater reward or information?: Yes, I lied on a few occasions.

Do you enjoy learning about the land and people of Skyrim and the history of Tamriel?: Yes, absolutely. The TES Lore is one of the few reasons I will buy and play these games. Tamriel is a land with a rich history; steeped in myth and legends.

Does listening to a NPC's story affect any decisions you make?: Yes, if they have a good reason, I'm more inclined to consider their requests.

Do you think you could be a better leader than any of the guild/faction leaders. How about the Jarls or even a King?: Yes!

Things aren't going your way, do you turn off the game, or do you revert to a previous save to try again?: If the game starts to irritate me, I think it's a signal to take a break. So yea, I usually turn it off and just walk away, to try again later.

How do you view the zoomorphic races? Elves? Humans? I get along well with all races, but don't particular like High Elves, since most of them are rather stuck up!

Do you perform tasks in your own way, or to-the-letter?: I've learned from past mistakes, when I just went my own way about some quests. It didn't turn out very well, so I try to pay attention to some instructions.

Stormcloaks or Imperial Legion?: Stormcloaks

Thieves Guild or Dark Brotherhood? Thieves Guild

Is marriage more of a business transaction than about affinity for a NPC?: I love Vorstag!

If you use magic, what do you use it for? Healing

If you use stealth, what do you use it for? Sneak up on the enemy

A lone friendly traveler is encountered in the wild, how do you approach him/her?: With Slow Time and a sneak backstab with a daedric longsword. He was a bandit as far as I'm concerned.
The same lone traveler is non-threatening, yet hostile(possibly of another allegiance or faction)?: I'd be angry if I was killed in a double-slow-mo stealth kill too.
Does apparel/armor aesthetics, practicality, value, or rarity determine use?: Aesthetics over practicality unless there's a drastic difference, rare items go in the chest of no return.
Do you prefer purchasing equipment or finding/looting/stealing/discovering for use?: I make all of mine.
Do you learn more about your quests, NPCs, and faction before undertaking quests?: Yes.
Do allegiances, morals and beliefs, or other factors determine who you work for/with and the tasks you perform?: Not in the slightest, everyone that pays or, even better, has a trinket is fair to offer a task.

Do you interact with NPCs other than for essential needs, wants, or tasks?: Very little.
Do you lie - when it is an option - to receive a greater reward or information?: Yes.
Do you enjoy learning about the land and people of Skyrim and the history of Tamriel?: Yes.
Does listening to a NPC's story affect any decisions you make?: Depends on how good of a story they can tell.
Do you think you could be a better leader than any of the guild/faction leaders. How about the Jarls or even a King?: No, and I don't care much for who leads.
Things aren't going your way, do you turn off the game, or do you revert to a previous save to try again?: I use the Sands of Time to magically go back of course. Or delete the character, whichever is my whim.
How do you view the zoomorphic races? Elves? Humans?: All are equally worthy for the slaughter.
Do you perform tasks in your own way, or to-the-letter?: My own way.
Stormcloaks or Imperial Legion?: For the Legion, I for one welcome our new High Elf overlords.
Thieves Guild or Dark Brotherhood?: Both or neither, it's the same to me.
Is marriage more of a business transaction than about affinity for a NPC?: I'd say business, marriage makes it easier to get them to the pile in Proudspire Manor.
If you use magic, what do you use it for? I use my left hand for magic, either for healing, buffs, or offensive purposes as the situation demands.
If you use stealth, what do you use it for? Assassination and hit and run tactics when needed.

Eh, I'm going to asume my first character, who acts like a scout to discover the world, will probably act the most like I really would. I haven't had much preparation to make up a personality for it anyway. One thing 'though: my character is a nord, with a taste for brawls and alcohol, and honour as a very important factor. In reality, I'm the complete opposite of that.

Demographic Questions

3. *Gender: female
4. *Education: computer technology & animal care (bachelor)
5. *Occupation: student
6. Preferred media source: internet
7. Preferred mode of transportation: bicycle and train
8. *Criminal history: N

Skyrim Related Questions
Approximate Age: Begin to mid 30's
Race: Nord (because she's Dragonborn, no other reason besides that, other than never having played with the race before)
Gender: female
Aptitude(Stealth, Combat, Magic, or mixed?): mixed combat and stealth
Top 10 Major Skills: 1) Sneak - 2) one-handed - 3) archery - 4) light armor - 5) speech - 6) restoration - 7) lockpicking - 8) smithing (due to the character being a silversmith) - 9) pickpocket & two-handed
Criminal History: no bounty, only once jailed in relation to a quest. A few assaults, and multiple items stolen, some pickpocketed (all of them from some travelling nobles who were too rude to me).
Allegiances: only myself. If you mean Stormcloaks vs. Imperials, my character is more inclined to the Stormcloaks. Ulfric still is an [censored]. I'm actually hoping I can put someone else in his position at the end (or at least myself, 'cuz someone else is probably asked too much :P)
Factions: Companions atm. Am planning to join the Thieves Guild, Winterhold College (for restoration) and the Stormcloaks.
Horseback or on foot?: foot. Horse is way too slow.
Do you spend more time in towns/villages/cities, or adventuring/questing/wandering the wild?: adventuring/questing. I've had my share of wandering on the tundra too. I still love doing that every now and then.
Do you organize and/or manage your inventories at homes?: Yes. I only possess the Whiterun house atm, but alchemy stuff belongs to its respective room with alchemy recipes in the book case, I've got a weapon closet, an armor closet, a wine closet, dragon bones and scales go in the chest, interesting books about Skyrim in general and the aldmeri war, the imperials and the stormcloaks in the bookcase, and garnets etc. in the end table.
Do you keep items that you never plan on using?: If they're nice enough for decoration purposes, sure. Like the books. And I collect Nord mead. And certain weapons that suit my character's tastes (and also a bit mine of course). Although I like elven armour and weapons a lot, it's a no-go for this character.
Do you pay attention to encumberment on a regular basis?: Well, I explore a lot, so I've got to. Otherwise I should literally walk all the way, lol.
Priorities(Gold, loot, quests, relationships, etc.)?: game immersion? Quests suitable to my character, and acting in her role I guess. Maybe being on good terms with people I choose too.
How do you get what you want from a NPC?: doing them a favor if they want me to (only limited to ONE favor 'though), otherwise manipulation aka Speech. Sometimes pickpocketing/stealing. Killing is very much last resort.
A lone friendly traveler is encountered in the wild, how do you approach him/her?: I listen to his/her story, but stay alert to any suspicious behaviour from him/her or the environment (triggered by the traveler).
The same lone traveler is non-threatening, yet hostile(possibly of another allegiance or faction)?: If (s)he needs help, I'll try to help. Otherwise I'll leave him/her alone and continue whatever I'm doing.
Does apparel/armor aesthetics, practicality, value, or rarity determine use?: Aesthetics and practicality do.
Do you prefer purchasing equipment or finding/looting/stealing/discovering for use?: discovering/finding and if useful, looting.
Do you learn more about your quests, NPCs, and faction before undertaking quests?: I try to, as much as possible.
Do allegiances, morals and beliefs, or other factors determine who you work for/with and the tasks you perform?: Yes.
When you have companions, do you let them do most of the work?: No, I try to let them guard my back and keep them as much safe as possible when I've got one with me. But I prefer to work alone.
Do you equip them with improved equipment, or let them use what they have?: I equip them with improved equipment if it suits them. No equipping a heavy armor and axe companion with mage robes and a staff after all.
Do you have them carry most of your burden(ex. loot, weapons, armor, etc.)?: Yeah, heh.
Does it bother you when NPCs say bad things about you?: Depends whether they're considered "friends" or not. Strangers can say whatever they want (unless they hurt the pride of this character, since she's supposed to be very into honor).
If any of those NPCs were to travel outside of civilization, what would you do, if anything?: Follow out of curiosity if I don't have an interesting quest going on.
Do you give up on difficult quests? Do you plan better for a new approach? Do you see it through, no matter how difficult?: I see it through. At first, I try to accomplish it in a normal way, if it fails I try new approaches. I get stubborn if it doesn't work out, but when I get too frustrated, I leave it be for a while so I can think for a better way, or level up.
Do you interact with NPCs other than for essential needs, wants, or tasks?: to get to know local rumours, their story if they look interesting, important or special.
Do you lie - when it is an option - to receive a greater reward or information?: yes
Do you enjoy learning about the land and people of Skyrim and the history of Tamriel?: yes, very much. As long as most of it stays in the background like it does now, hidden in rumours of NPCs and books.
Does listening to a NPC's story affect any decisions you make?: Yes. The believability of that story also depends on how much I trust that respective NPC.
Do you think you could be a better leader than any of the guild/faction leaders. How about the Jarls or even a King?: Nah, I prefer wandering around, leave the duties and responsibilities to those leaders. Especially the Jarl of Whiterun, I like him. Ulfric should be replaced 'though.
Things aren't going your way, do you turn off the game, or do you revert to a previous save to try again?: Revert.
How do you view the zoomorphic races? Elves? Humans?: Elves seem to feel quite superior (with a possible exception of the Orcs), the zoomorphic races are treated bad by every other race and are (possibly as a consequence?) easily tempted to take the illegal path in life, and humans are always busy with conquering lands in either military, economic or diplomatic ways. I like to meet Khajiits 'tough, they always look nice and adorable. ^^ But I've never played with one before, heh. Personally 'though, I don't really pay attention to the race they belong to, I only know this one's a jerk, that one is cool, and the other one is helpful.
Do you perform tasks in your own way, or to-the-letter?: In my own way.
Stormcloaks or Imperial Legion?: Personally, I don't know yet. Imperial legion is a puppet to the Aldmeri Dominion, and I'm not sure whether the Stormcloaks can defeat or even hold the Aldmeri back. Plus, the Stormcloaks are pretty racist. Reminds me of the dunmer on Morrowind, with their stupid "outlander" each time. If only they would join up with the Redguards to form a front against the Aldmeri. This character will go for Stormcloaks, because it suits her role.
Thieves Guild or Dark Brotherhood?: This character goes for Thieves Guild, she's not a killer after all. Just a scavenger.
Is marriage more of a business transaction than about affinity for a NPC?: I'm doubtful whether this character will marry ... I like the independent status. Suits her more than hooking up with a guy or gal. Unless there's really someone I can call a fun comrade to adventure with. Aela the Huntress looked pretty interesting, but I don't think they'll marry, haha.
If you use magic, what do you use it for? Restoration in this case. Healing primarily. I'd like to try out the frenzy-like abilities from the Illusion school with my next character 'though.
If you use stealth, what do you use it for? Listening in on conversations between NPCs (who wouldn't say the same when you're visible), not alerting enemies so I can surprise attack them (and hopefully one-shot them with the blade if possible), or challenge the AI by activating some traps or things so the enemies need to take care of the consequences first.

Do you spend more time in towns/villages/cities, or adventuring/questing/wandering the wild?: Equal parts both.
Do you organize and/or manage your inventories at homes?: I put all the stuff I want to save (mementos and such) in one chest in Breezehome.
Do you keep items that you never plan on using?: Yup.
Do you pay attention to encumberment on a regular basis?: Oh yeah.
Priorities(Gold, loot, quests, relationships, etc.)?: Gold, quests, and companions.
How do you get what you want from a NPC?: Either persuasion or try to get on their good side.
A lone friendly traveler is encountered in the wild, how do you approach him/her?: Sheath my weapons and ask them what's wrong.
The same lone traveler is non-threatening, yet hostile(possibly of another allegiance or faction)?: I attack without remorse.
Does apparel/armor aesthetics, practicality, value, or rarity determine use?: Whatever's the most useful and practical, though I mix it up when I change settings like being in the tundra or a city.
Do you prefer purchasing equipment or finding/looting/stealing/discovering for use?: Whatever works best at the moment.
Do you learn more about your quests, NPCs, and faction before undertaking quests?: Usually yes. I don't want to get myself involved in things I don't like.
Do allegiances, morals and beliefs, or other factors determine who you work for/with and the tasks you perform?: Oh yes. If it helps someone or a lot of people at the end, I'll do it. Sometimes, you need to get your hands dirty to make the world a better place.
When you have companions, do you let them do most of the work?: I'm a loner. I love having friends, but I don't want them getting hurt or killed.
Do you equip them with improved equipment, or let them use what they have?: I never have them around.
Do you have them carry most of your burden(ex. loot, weapons, armor, etc.)?: Never. That's rude.
Does it bother you when NPCs say bad things about you?: Yeah, but at least I know that I've done more in one day than they'll do their entire life.
If any of those NPCs were to travel outside of civilization, what would you do, if anything?: I'd leave them alone. You can't make friends with everyone.
Do you give up on difficult quests? Do you plan better for a new approach? Do you see it through, no matter how difficult?: Oh yes. If it's too hard, I just leave it be until I'm ready.
Do you interact with NPCs other than for essential needs, wants, or tasks?: Not really. I see no point in talking if I'm not going to get anything out of it.
Do you lie - when it is an option - to receive a greater reward or information?: If it'll stop any bloodshed or helps the cause, I'll do it, but I won't like it.
Do you enjoy learning about the land and people of Skyrim and the history of Tamriel?: Heck yes.
Does listening to a NPC's story affect any decisions you make?: Mhm.
Do you think you could be a better leader than any of the guild/faction leaders. How about the Jarls or even a King?: Not really. If I don't want responsibility for one or two people, I sure as heck don't want to be the head of an organization. I admit though, that If I were the head of a powerful group, I'd try to ensure that it doesn't stray into corruption and does what it's supposed to do for the good of everyone.
Things aren't going your way, do you turn off the game, or do you revert to a previous save to try again?: Depends on my mood.
How do you view the zoomorphic races? Elves? Humans?: Beastmen are misunderstood, Mer are arrogant and vain (though it's a bit understandable), and men are men; advantageous and ambitious-yet fragile.
Do you perform tasks in your own way, or to-the-letter?: Generally my own way unless if something big hangs in the balance. I don't want to screw anything up on account on being stupid.
Stormcloaks or Imperial Legion?: Legion. At least they pretend to care about anyone who isn't an Imperial. The Thalmor will get what's coming to them.
Thieves Guild or Dark Brotherhood?: Both. They're not so bad when you dig a bit into their ideologies. Some people have to die and some people are little to rich for their own good.
Is marriage more of a business transaction than about affinity for a NPC?: Nope. I marry who I'm interested in.
If you use magic, what do you use it for? Healing for myself or friends.
If you use stealth, what do you use it for? To stay hidden, then strike with no one noticing.
