Downside to lycanthrophy?

Post » Tue Jun 05, 2012 5:48 pm

I've finished the Companions quest line & helped Kodlak find peace. I have 4 more... of the quest items to spare.
Was wondering whether I should heal myself too. Thus far I've never transformed into a werewolf, I see no need to. Apart from not getting the "well rested" bonus, are there any other downsides if I remain infected, if I don't transform into werewolf form at all?

Unless we actually die in an expansion and you have to go to the Hunting Grounds instead of your normal racial 'afterlife' location I don't know of any...except for the comments from the guards.

Well, you can also commit 'murders' as a werewolf if there are any annoying NPCs you want to dispatch so you wouldn't be able to do that if you cured yourself. :P

FWIW, I got Ataxia the other day even though I'm still a werewolf. <_<

I really wanted to like being a werewolf but i just couldnt. You can be killed rather easily if you dont keep exploiting the Howl 'fear' effect, which makes npcs run from you. The sprinting attack is powerful, but has to be timed right. After the companions i cured myself, being the well rested helped me level up my slower skills

Yeah, you lose the well rested bonus. I kept it because I'm hoping the feature gets fleshed out in a future expansion. Combat is worthless, disease resistance is nice. I only transform when I have a long way to travel because of the run speed.

disease resistance is nice.
It only prevents vampirism. It wont protect you from things like Ataxia and the other diseases. Aka Werewolf immunity(vampirism for that matter) is broken.

So there are no real downsides to being a werewolf (and remaining in human form all the time), except for the inability to get the well-rested bonus?

Is that a rare bug cuz I've never had that problem.

Could be a PC only thing.

Other than being torn apart by the Silver hand if you give them the chance, nope.

Assuming you didn't exterminate them completely

I think the effect is bugged but it doesn't only effect vampirism. I've been a werewolf for around a hundred hours of play and I haven't contracted as much as a sniffle.

I was a bit disappointed by how the werewolf thing was done in Skyrim. I mean it looks fantastic, I like the idea of the circle, and it seems like I should be a death machine, but ... I always feel more vulnerable as a werewolf than as a human. That can't be right, can it?

Anyway, I chose to keep the werewolf curse simply for the disease resistance bonus. And the well rested bonus I didn't care about as my character was already quite powerful. I never bother transforming anymore though as it's more trouble than it's worth at the moment. Hopefully Beth will release a patch\DLC that boosts the werewolf abilities a bit in the future.

That's right. My Argonian is a werewolf, and has transformed maybe twice. Grinding a couple skills up to 100 took more work, but since I've more or less finished the game at level 50, meh.

Other than being torn apart by the Silver hand if you give them the chance, nope.

They'll do that even if you are not a werewolf. Wrong place, wrong time.

Of course, "given them a chance" means "walk into their stronghold, agro them all at the same time, remove all your armor, and don't offer any defense."

Or put another way, turn into a werewolf on one of the anti- silver hand quests. :P

Werewolves are only useful with Feeding/Fear Howl exploit.
