Whatever city you like the most. Although, people say the Solitude home is the best.

Maybe spoilers: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Houses

I recommend the house in Markarth, beautiful view just outside the front door :)
If you like showing off weapons/armor, though, Windhelm is best. Three mannequins.

Basically each city hold has a house for sale. The Jarl and his/her steward will sell you the house and the steward will offer to "furnish" it for you.

You need to contact the steward for work and then do at least 5 quests for other people in the hold (to up your reputation) and then the Jarl or Steward will have dialogue to buy a house.

It's my opinion that the easiest house to buy is the one in Whiterun. You are almost forced to go there right out of the gate. After you do about four or five quests in the initial chain (to start the dragon attacks) you should get the option to buy the house right next door to the blacksmith. This is really the only house you'll need. I also suggest the mod to put the enchanters table inside the house (note: do not activate the mod until AFTER you have bought the house).

Whiterun is the cheapest but you and least distance you have to travel once you are in a city. Nice town, no crime, companions. I feel like a realtor! You really don't need much room. There is five houses for sale in skyrim.

You can also get married and use your spouse's house as your own. Just not all actuay have homes ( some live in taverns or shared shops).
