Lydia stays in my house in Whiterun 24/7. I took her out once, and then inevitably lost her in battle as she seems to always be way behind. In any case, i assumed she was dead and gone forever, but a few game days later i went back home and she was just hanging out in my house. I haven't taken her out since then, and she is just always hanging around waiting for me. I assume all followers act the same.

Lydia stays in Breezehome because the is the housecarl there.

Your follower will leave your service if you make them wait too long in one spot, though I dont know the duration, its not like 3 months though. More measured in days, if not hours.

Dismissing followers causes them to travel back to their home location (i. e. where you first found them).

It's about three days, and they'll go back to where you first hired them.

Well my current follower on my main account is Kharjo.. And yeah im not sure if he'll just go away or stay as Lydia in your case...

Kharjo will go back to the caravan he usually travels with, so he can be tough to track down again.

I see.. Well then I'll be just dragging him around with me and trying to keep him alive while doing quests... *sigh*

The only followers you can't get back are some of the ones related to Daedric quests.

Yup, you can get him back, you gotta hunt down his caravan though. I just wait in front of Dawnstar 'till they show up.
