Tamriel is the entire continent... skyrim is a part of tamriel. Do you mean Cyrodill?

It could also be there for immersion. many people were pissed that there were no gates in Oblivion. Or was it?

The other provinces were in Oblivion, too. The extra land is almost certainly there to be seen from a distance (Red Mountain from the Throat of the World, for instance) not to be used in future expansions. But we'll see...

You can find one across the River and just northeast of Windhelm. North of Bohethia's shrine. It obviously leads to Morrowind.

There is also one at the SE corner of the map past Riften. I like them, they are mysterious. Makes a lot more sense than having impassible mountains blocking access to other provinces...

I did find a road near the edges of Falkreath that lead to "you can not go any further". Who knows? Matbe this is the way to the next expansion/dlc.

I'm convinced the western part of the map- you know, the part of the map that has a lot of empty "You cannot go there" space- will be used for expansions.

There is one in the very South-East corner of the Rift leading to Morrowind, one East of Windhelm leading to Morrowind, one in the South of the Rift leading out to Cyrodiil I believe (not literally a gate, but an impassable trail), there is also one leading to Hammerfell I think. I never explored further than traipsing along and walking by a trail South-West of Dushnikh Yal. I am also willign to bet that there is a passage leading to Orsinium and High Rock.

Anyway, I think they may be used in future expansions or are there for immersion/for modders to explore and build into. Most hopefully the Former, probably the latter

I think the one in the SW has a gate, because iirc you can jump up into the top of it (from the rocks on the right) and look down the path. It does go a long way, but there isn't as much detail. I think there is some blank space on the world map so they probably could plug something in down there.

Look like these gates are the different ways the imperial armies used to enter Skyrim during the great war, they are mentioned in the book of the same title.

Ja, the SW has the most open, unused space on the map, followed by the NW. If they're going to be adding anything in, it makes sense for it to be there -1- because it's the biggest space -2- because High Rock is a small place, it probably won't feature as the focus of a TES game, and it's to the west of Skyrim ... dun dun dun!
