Upgrading Quest Objects

Say you get a bow and its for a quest. If you make the mistake and upgrade it with blacksmithing you will then make it unuseable as a quest item and also something you can never get rid of in your inventory

I don't think so. At least not for all quest objects. I smith everything and I got rid of upgraded quest objects before.
