The ES series REALLY needs to implement skill-based quests

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 12:11 pm

I think quests shouldn't be accessible until you have reached certain skill ranks.

It is weird to be Archmage and then asked to go collect berries (made up example).

Or head of the Companions who is then asked to go and fetch a mammoth tusk.

As players progress, they would be looking for things to do - so many of the minor quests would get done before hitting skill levels 75-100 which is when the last 3-5 quests for guilds etc. should be available imho.

I also wonder why Bethesda didn't slow the level speed a bit.... I have often hit level 40 with 1/2 or more of the game still to do. But that is a more minor wondering.

What are people's thoughts on the implementation of skill rank being connected to quests?

That is actually a great idea! It is kind of ridiculous to become archmage when all my magic skills are at 15... But it will never happen.

I could see doing that for Guilds, since one would think that the leader of a guild is the best at what the guild does, however I wouldn't want to see it done across the board as that would get really annoying.

They definitely should do that. Having to fetch things for villagers when im a really important and influential person is very weird.

Also agree on leveling speed. Same thing has happend since Morrowind though. Im always max level before im even halfway trough the game. By slowing the leveling speed and adding a lot more stuff to the important quest lines they could fix the situation a bit.

Especially after they just said something like "dragonborn, you are a true hero" they ask me to get them 4 apples....really?

It's a great idea, but it'll never be implemented purely because all characters are now required to be able to do everything. Also it would be seen as a sort of step back towards Morrowind, which had a similar setup for advancing through the guilds, and doing that would anger so many "elder scrolls fans"

Why make an open world RPG(supposedly), and then design it with zero replay value beyond what you choose to put into it?

This needs to happen. The way it is now makes no sense whatsoever. A character with little to no actual aptitude for whatever guild they are a part of has no business becoming leader if they do not have the abilities to match.

Oh, I agree for the guilds. Also the quests should involve using the appropriate skills for that guild and not be able to be completed without using those skills.

Some quests don't appear until your a high level. Like A Night to Remember and Septimus' Letter.

Unfortunately this doesn't apply to Guilds

The funny thing is, there were skill requirements in Daggerfall and Morrowind.

EDIT: I hate level based requirements. I liked the daedric quest system in Daggerfall, were you had to be a certain rank to be able to summon Princes. Yes, because of the skill requirements this is still technically a level requirement, its just not as bland. But yeah, bring back skill requirements. Not level requirements.

It's how it was in Morrowind though. You couldn't progress through the guilds without improving the relevant skills.

No idea why they removed that.

Actually, it is up to YOU, how and in which order you play the quest-chains. I tend to do these little helper-jobs when I am a freshman. Later on, I hear about them and think, go get yourself an apprentice to get things done and move on. This is roleplaying game and you are the one who shapes the world around you. With just a bit of imagination the journey from apprentice to head of a given guild in Skyrim can take quite some time and be pretty enjoyable.

That's pretty much the essence of Skyrim.
