Probably better to use the word "Follower" instead of companion since companions are the werewolves.

If you open the creation kit, assuming you are on PC, you can see the various capabilites of all of them.

Playing on Master difficulty, I like Jenassa for stealth, bows, light armor and dual wielding to compliment my stealth archer.

For my mages, I like Vorstag for heavy armor, one handed, block, and health. His stats are very good in the creation kit.

I quite like Brelyna Maryon . . .

well since I used the wabbajack on her anyway ~ she's quite powerful now

as she is a mage she usually casts from behind me ~ so not getting in my way ~ leaving me to charge in with my blades

:blush:
quite a nice little arrangement we have . . .

wouldn't want to marry her though :!

Most of the followers can be powerhouses if properly equipped and leveled up (via console or Wabbajack-ing them) so it comes down to personality and how much fun they are to play with in my view. To that end, I keep coming back to Stenvar. Dude tears things up with two-handed swords and has tons of funny and topical commentary depending on where you are and what you're doing. Was in a bandit fort with him the other day, and he started talking about how good of a setup the bandits had and that maybe we'd find a keg of ale we could "borrow". :biggrin:

My advice if you're playing a melee character is to choose a mage follower. They are almost all quite powerful at their max levels, and you'll avoid the insane frustration of them getting in your way. Some non-mage followers will also stay at range if you give them a bunch of decent staves, since there seems to be a preference for using them with some characters. Other than that I go with Urtho and recommend you look around for a personality you like. Another thing I've found is followers at lower levels don't path well, and are reluctant to jump down even small drops (guess they are afraid of getting hurt when they have less Health).
Here's some stats:

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Followers#Follower_Stats

Read the "Follower Stats" section of that page, should explain what is meant by that phrase we've used and why people on consoles do it. If you're on the PC you can just use the disable and then enable console commands to level them up directly without having to bother using that artifact.

Wabbajack . . .

there is a big bug in the game that stops followers from upgrading as they progress . . .

there is a fix but it takes a small adventure ~ {ask for rumours at the inn in solitude and follow leads for a strange man hanging around}

this will tell you how to use the wabbajack once you have it . . .

Cicero is the best follower IMHO. I killed him on my first character because I thought he was annoying and on my second character I let him live just to take a different path. It turns out he's hilarious as a follower and the most versatile too. Give him some muffle boots and with his max sneak he won't sabotage your stealth character unlike other followers, he's got maxed one handed and will even dual wield if you give him a forsworn weapon. His archery is also almost at maximum, but he doesn't have a starting bow which means he doesn't have the glitch where archer followers will refuse to use daedric bows in favour of their starting hunting bow. And most importantly, he sings and dances.
