Map tweaks not working...

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 8:39 am

I have tried the tweaks from the NVIDIA Tweak Guide, as well as other suggested by various map related mods, and for some reason INI tweaks are no longer effecting anything with my 3D map.

For example, I can delete the [MapMenu] section completely from Skyrim.ini, load my save, and it still looks the same as it did when I had uLockedObjectMapLOD=8 and uLockedTerrainLOD=8.

I try this:

Spoiler
[MapMenu]
uLockedObjectMapLOD=0
uLockedTerrainLOD=0
bWorldMapNoSkyDepthBlur=1
fWorldMapNearDepthBlurScale=0
fWorldMapDepthBlurScale=0
fWorldMapMaximumDepthBlur=0
fMapMenuOverlayNormalStrength=2.2000
fMapMenuOverlayNormalSnowStrength=0.8000
fMapWorldMaxPitch=360.0000
fMapWorldMinPitch=0.0000
fMapWorldYawRange=3600.0000
fMapWorldTransitionHeight=130000.0000
fMapWorldMaxHeight=130000.0000
fMapWorldMinHeight=130.0000
fMapWorldCursorMoveArea=0.9000
fMapWorldHeightAdjustmentForce=100.0000
fMapWorldZoomSpeed=0.0500
fMapLookMouseSpeed=3.0000
fMapMoveKeyboardSpeed=0.0005
fMapZoomMouseSpeed=5.0000
sMapCloudNIF=0

...which is someone's settings for allegedly being able to zoom in to true detail, and still, nothing changes. It is like the values have been stored in my save and now refuse to even read the INI file.

I have verified I have no other ninja INI overwriting my main Skyrim.ini, and tried refreshini from the console, but nothing works. It is particularly frustrating because I wanted to check out the HD map with roads mod, and it won't work with these booched settings.

Anyone know a way to fix this without starting a new character?

Are you sure you're editing the right ini in the right place?

You could try renaming or deleting the .ini entirely and letting Skyrim generate a new one. This may do the same thing as refreshini, but if you can't think of anything else to do it might be worth a try.

I've had some strange experiences with the .inis myself. I recently switched from XP to Windows 7 and afterward moved my old Skyrim folder into my new Windows 7 My Games. Skyrim applied all my old changes except bEnableFileSelection=1 (the line that allows us to access Data Files in the launcher). Every other line in the ini works fine...except for that one. So I feel your pain.

Thanks for the suggestion. I think there is something much larger going on with my Skyrim however. I just deleted both INI files after backing them up, and after running the game, loading a save, making a new save, and exiting, I went back to find there are no new INI files created.

I sense a complete reinstall in my future. =(

Gah! Full reinstall didn't fix it! It must be locked into my saves. Funny thing is, I loaded a save at the character creation point and played up to the keep, and there is still no effect on the map. Tried the one to remove the clouds to be sure I wasn't just misreading the quality level, but nope, no effect. Guess I'll just deal with it.
