Becoming thane?

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 11:13 am

I am about to purchase the house in Riften and I am thinking of letting the bug happen and not become thane because i don't need or want the house carl. I am just wondering if there is a story reason to being thane, that I may miss if I do this.

Not really. You get off committing a crime once because you're thane and thats about it. Maybe you should save it to kill Maven.

Can you get a home anywhere without becoming a thane? (Sorry to latch onto this thread.)

Owning a property is a pre-requiste to become a thane, but not the other way around. I think you have to become a thane for Hjerim in Windhelm though.

With a spouse, Iona, and a follower...it just not that cozy ;)

Why not just become thane and kill your housecarl? That's better than intentionally trying to make your game glitch. Who knows, that glitch could lead to other glitches..

Is there a point at which she becomes non-essential? Or do you mean strip her essential and then kill her? :P

Being Thane in a hold in which you can buy a house grants you a follower. Other than that (and the higher tolerance of guards for crimes committed) there are no other advantages. If you hate having an NPC in your house bumping into your carefully placed loot, then avoid pursuing the quests to become thane!

In Whiterun, you were first given right to purchase property, and after one more quest you became Thane and were given your Housecarl, Lydia. In Riften, after you performed the required quest, you were required to purchase the house before the Jarl appointed you to be a Thane. In both of these situations, you could buy houses without becoming a Thane.

Actually, everywhere, though there are some caveats:
-Whiterun: Both getting the house and becoming thane are tied to MQ Dragon Rising. Thus, you need to avoid completing Dragon Rising to have the house without becoming thane. This can be done either by not killing the dragon, by not reporting to Balgruuf, or by moving away from him after getting MQ The Way of the Voice but before Balgruuf finishes his speech (which allows some continuation in the MQ.)

-Riften: Because of a timing bug, you have to do the personal quest (shutting down skooma dealers) and the five citizen quests (easy mode: Ivarstead is in the Rift,) or cause Maven Blackbriar to become jarl (see below,) before you can buy Honeyside. At the moment you buy it, another bug forces you to decide whether to become thane at that point, or to go to Honeyside and never become thane.

-Windhelm: Buying the house requires progress in the Civil War - in the Empire's case, completion.

-Markarth: If you do Molag Bal's daedric quest, he "gives" you the house that contains his shrine. Purchasing the real house requires level 20, and can become difficult if you get involved in the city's Forsworn drama.

-Riften and Markarth: Be aware that changing jarl will result in a short track to thaneship: you won't need to do the personal quest, nor the 5 citizen quests. Restoring the previous jarl (by changing it through MQ Season Unending and changing it back through the Civil War) will restore the added requirements. In Markarth's case, this will fix the problem that might crop up if you did Cidhna Mine first.

I'm leaning towards the house in Riften. I'm a mage from Winterhold and have no interest in the TG. I've no interest in politics at all- yet. It seems the easiest path without invoking the CW or main quest lines.

Aye, that it is. The skooma dealer questline is easy enough; and you can get all five citizen quests in Ivarstead if you want.
-Temba Widearm: Kill bears* or chop wood.
-Narfi: Find his sister or give him beggar gold.
-Klimmek: Deliver his supplies to High Hrothgar.
-Wilhelm: Clear out the upper part of Shroud Hearth Barrow (just traps and one guy)
-Boti: Gather wheat!

(Actually, if you find the pelts by other means, you don't even have to kill the bears...)

And three, if you like you some Akaviri weapons: you can use the Ebony Blade to "call" her, and it counts as a power-up for the blade. :D

I did the Book of Love quest. Would this count for one of them? I've also cleared the Shor's Stone's mine of spiders. I've ... delivered things for the College to and from Riften. I don't know if that would count.

Yeah, I should go chop wood and what not. Thanks!

Strangely enough it appears that Book of Love (I guess because the people you help aren't in The Rift.) does not count, but getting married yourself does.

Book of Love counts, and the Shor's Stone quest counts. The College quests shouldn't. (Oddly, getting married counts as a quest for Maramal, and therefore for Riften as well.)
