ArcherMelee Combo

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 5:49 pm

Recent re-bought Skyrim on the 360 and I'm getting bored of my spellsword character, Wondering what would be the best route to go with for an archer/melee build. Would it be worth while using light or heavy armor in the long run?, Also would it be best to go sword and board when things get hairy or dual weirld/two handed? Thanks

Since you'll theoretically not need as much armor because you have a bow, Light Armor is probably a better choice. Its Stamina regeration perk could definitely help for when you are zooming in with the bow.

Your melee combat style will come down to preference. I would probably do 1H/Illusion, that could be another option to consider.

I'm having a lot of fun with a theif archer/1H/Shield build. He uses light armor.

There can be big variations on archery/melee style. I used to do light armor and focused more on archery and sneak than melee, but now I'm doing more melee focused build. I use heavy armor and sword and board style with restoration and alteration magic. Archery is more of optional thing I do time to time. I do smithing and enchanting but no alchemy.

At Master difficulty, I used light armor with smithing (light only), enchanting, and alchemy. I perked sneak attack for bow. Eventually only dragon breath and repeated spell attacks could harm me.

Archery and melee are far superior damage output compared to destruction.

I would say go with whatever armor you think looks best for your late game character. One thing to consider is the Ebony Mail which is heavy and is pretty good for a melee archer. I generally like light armor though because you move so much faster. However, my best character is probably my bow assassin with Boethiah's Ebony Mail and she just flopped down 4 perks to get to Ebony Smithing all at once which also helps with Ebony bows, which are the coolest.

As for build. I suggest taking a shield. Hot key shield, bow, and sword and you can switch back and forth easily. Only take the first shieldwall perk and quick reflexes from the block tree. Same thing goes with sneak, take the first one, then, when you are close to forty skill take Badkstab and Deadly Aim at the same time if possible, because you won't likely be sneaking up on anyone enough to do much with Backstab, but you need it to get Deadly Aim. (Theoretically you can just use backstab and daggers to kill everything but that is no fun). Then take the one that lightens your armor at one point but not high priority as you are far enough away with bow/sneak that you don't need a whole ton of sneak skill anyway.

One thing you could also do is bow and dual wield, but you can't use spells with that really. But you can hot key your bow, and manually equip your melee weapons, then to switch back and forth you just use the bow hot key button. Dual wield can do insane damage.

I think big advantage of Heavy armor is in the early game, when you are weak and heavy armor gives you a bit of extra protection. There are no drawbacks to Light Armor except that it gives you less protection in the early game. If you can survive early game, Elven armor is the best, most practical armor in the game because it's the lightest armor in the game, and you can still reach the armor cap quite easily. If you smith and enchant.

I'm a pure stealth archer alchemist,I don't need anything else.
Well allright I perk pickpocket and lockpicking for roleplaying purposes.
I do wear light armor, again more for roleplaying than for armor since I put only one or two perks in it and only wear fur armor.

Also when I do break stealth I resort to bashing with the bow to give me time to run for more cover if I can find it,if not I keep a run and fire tactic.Stamina is allways good for this kind of build.

Personally I very much enjoy this kind of glass cannon bild and can't really see playing anything else,at least not for long.
One last thing don't under estimate alchemy, its awesome.

Sword and board, two handed... both are fun choices. Don't bother with dual wield though. Modders did a better job adding dual-wield to Oblivion than gamesas did in Skyrim.
