Puzzles! I can't get enough of them!

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 8:11 am

I love the puzzles in this game. My favorite puzzles are the ones where I turn stone pillars, and the ones where I flip levers up and down and use trial and error to open the gates.

Well, okay, I guess the first one always has the answer spelled out for you on a wall or an item.
And I guess the second one isn't so much a puzzle as a delay, since there is no way to intuitively figure it out without just flipping switches at random.

Well, at least there's that other kind of puzzle!
Right?
Oh.
Hm.

Well, the claws are neat, I guess.

i, too, love puzzles in these types of games.

the puzzles need to become more sophisticated and difficult. with increased development and implementation.

Too bad they're all too easy. What's the point of a puzzle if you put the answer right above?

I hate those.
The solution is always too simple and too easy.

They are made for nords. What's the preferred Nord class? Barbarian. Now... Look here: [http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:ABCs_for_Barbarians]

I would have loved some more complex puzzles sprinkled through the game, with unique rewards for solving them.

I agree. The puzzles are a nice addition, but absolutely not difficult enough.

Haha, I remember that book! It was so funny when I first discovered it.

But I remember that a book contains a passage in which was said that the puzzles (well, the actually the claws) aren't meant to keep intruders from intruding, but to keep the draugr from getting outside the tombs. So Bethesda has an excuse at the ready. xP

the puzzles are a joke. If you are going to put puzzles in your game, make them puzzles, not 'match the picture with the picture'. It is actually an affront to my inteliigence. I would love to see some sort of puzzles overhaul mod that actually made them, well, puzzles.

I like to play Puzzles when I am playing a Puzzle game. Puzzles in RPGs have always bugged me. At least in this game, they are easy solve and don't get in the way of the story. Would I like more of a challenge in them? Nah, I have other games for more challenging puzzles.

puzzles/traps have always been a part of games like these. crypts, tombs, locks, indiana jones, star wars, whatever, lol. just increase the sophistication, difficulty and consequences.

well I guess you speak for the majority. Would have been nice to see a system where you could bypass all puzzles in a dungeon if you don't like them, that way people that want puzzles could have actual decent puzzles, and people that don't want them don't get them.

No puzzles are better than easy puzzles. If they're all easy, rather than a challenge and something to look forward to, it becomes a chore and, well, a bore.

I do enjoy puzzles, though, and I hope that the DLCs will feature some challenging ones and I hope TES VI does, as well.

The Puzzles I am referring to are like the ones in Dead Money Mothership Zeta where the whole DLC seems to be just a puzzle. Puzzles in the manner of a Dungeon Maze or a Lock Sequence is different. I should have said I don't mind the puzzles we have, just don't make the game all puzzles.

no, not hard, but the whole puzzle-thing seems so childish to me. i don't think they fit the game at all.
that's just me and my associations though.

There are a lot of things that are totally new to this installment of the TES series, like puzzles, crafting, etc, and I think Beth made them easy because they were just introducing the concept and wanted to see how we would react to it. Can you imagine if the puzzles got increasingly more difficult and people didn't like them? The entire board would be filled with posts saying "Now I can't even do random dungeons without doing homework or digging around for clues! This isn't a mystery game, it's an RPG! I can't complete all the content without going online!"

Who here remembers the most asked question when Morrowind came out? It was about the damn Dwemer puzzle box, the first main quest item you had to find. Oooooh my god, the anger, complaints, frustration, etc. "Why isn't it easier to find? It's almost impossible without the internetz!11"

So...there's an answer to why there aren't more challenging puzzles in the game :)

According to my brother, there is a dungeon comprised completely of deathtrap puzzles which get increasingly more difficult to decipher. I couldn't say where it is precisely, but I think it was somewhere in the south of the map. So if you're looking for a little bit of challenge, I'd look there.

I can understand wanting to introduce it in some lesser form at first, but the form that it is in is just annoying. Turn pillars. Flip switches. Turn Pillars. Flip switches. It's not so much a puzzle as a waste of time.

Last week everyone was complaining about the lame puzzles. I see the topic is back for this week too.

I kept asking you people what puzzles you would like to see instead...you know, constructive feedback... only one person answered with a specific example. Some videos from Myst with a fish behind a window and you had to press the floating bubbles that made music in the right order to progress.... something I don't think would fit very well in TES. Nevertheless he was the only person that attempted to offer a solution. I think the rest are complaining for the sake of complaining about something.

I would like to think some of you have some really good ideas for Bethesda for better puzzles.

The puzzles, while stupidly simple, add a little flavor. I wasn't expecting Portal 2 in every dungeon, so I wasn't disappointed.
