Unscripted surprises and 1st person. What makes Skyrim worth

After my experience at Margoth i decided to return to Solitude and complete my outstanding errands there..

I was making my way to some bandit den someone had asked me to clear. I found myself following a small path through quite dense woodland, the weather got grey and darkish as night was coming in... Lydia following behind me as always, watching my back. I wasn`t even paying much attention to the map (I don`t have the compass or markers) and I started drifting off as I automatically just yomped through the forest. I wasn`t too worried about meeting any real dangers...

Suddenly there was this loud growl to my right and a bit behind me, "A bear or Tiger again- Typical!" I thought to myself.

I turned around to see a huge Dragon barely 10 feet away from me. To my surprise it was on the ground, wings folded and looked as surprised as I was. I think it must have been asleep and I must have run right past it!

I cursed and ran, hoping to get some space before he breathed fire all over me, but Lydia was not so fearful and charged it. In that moment I turned too and attacked the Dragon on its right flank, using all the poisions I could get on each strike, while Lydia kept it busy.

All I could see was wing and the scaly side of his haunches that looked incredibly realistic. After I hit him with about 3 strikes he suddenly flapped his wings and literally zoomed straight up into the air like a helicopter, I followed him go straight up. Then I turned and ran for the nearest cover, knowing he was going to get space to use his flame, but he instead attacked Lydia and it wasn`t flame, but some kind of cold or frost breath.

I attacked again, but then he turned on me and my health dropped to about 10%. I had no health potions at all, so used my last poisons and waited for the inevitable wipeout.

But he swooped up into the air again, allowing me the chance to run. I dodged between trees in the forest and kept running until the Dragon lost me. Lydia caught up with me later.

But that pretty epic, especially in 1st person.

We got to the bandit camp. Killed a couple of bandits, met another one who I charged and Shouted at to push and stunn him. Then got my sword out.

"I give up- You win!" he cried instanty running away Lydia hot on his heels. Never seen anyone run from my shout before.

Then he jumped into an underground lake and started swimming away.

"You`re a shame to your kind!" Lydia shouted, standing at the edge.

Classic!

I really can`t imagine doing this in 3rd person, it`s so much more `there` in 1st.

I had a very similar experience in 3rd person only it was about 30% more exiting...

Funny how your description of it is 30% less than mine. How about backing up those words like I have?

The thing is in 1st person you feel more there and more immediate. In 3rd you feel detached from the experience. I don`t feel like I`m in the quest.

That`s how I see it anyway.

Im just as immersed in 3rd person as you are in first person. I think 1st person combat is jerky, has a horrible field of view and just not that good. 3rd person zoomed in close is a better fit for me.
