Don't you think we should be able to clean quests?

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 2:20 am

I have played for awhile now and am wondering to myself - why can't I clean out a quest that I am NOT going to do?

I understand leaving some open to do if my mind changes BUT I'm playing a battlemage and poking around Winterhold right now and there are some quests that because of the character I am playing I won't do because they don't make sense for my character. I am not going to join the Companions (I feel like companions should be Nord for whatever reason.) and I don't want to be a werewolf. Shouldn't I be able to clean that quest out of my quest boxes because I'm not going to do it this playthrough. I try to keep as little quests as possible anyway but for the ones thrusted upon me I wish I could get rid of.

I agree if only for the reason of clearing the broken quests from the journal. I've got two 'collect' the bounty from Skald' entries, plus it still tells me to investigate the College of Winterhold... and I'm the Arch-Mage.

Does someone know if the console can do that?

*PC user waiting for the CK to come out* removing the quests from the log would break things in a very bad way, but a Hide Quest button should be harmless.

I hate that quest that asks you to sacrifice a companion which never goes away even if you say no.
The more villanous quests should give you an opt out.

Yes. You can set the stage of the quest.

I like the idea of hiding quests too but how would clearing them out break anything? I mean you shouldn't be able to clean out the MQ but most anything optional should be okay.

What's so wrong about just deactivating the quest and moving on with your life?

The big issue is if you decide later on you want to do the quest, you may not get the scripted event that triggers getting the quest. It all depends on how the quest is given. Some quests are intermingled, but that is not as much an issue.

Yes, I would love to clear out some of the misc quests. I have one broken quest that will never go away (unless I console it away). At least a way to hide them maybe. But the entire journal is ugly, poorly designed and lacks fundamental functionality. Not to mention it provides no information.

Yeah that makes sense. I think stuff like joining the Companions, TG, DB, College, ETC should have the option of hiding the quest. If you for some reason decided to do that quest later on you would just "unhide" it.

No information? It has a giant beacon saying GO HERE. You do not need any information when it shows you exactly what to grab/kill.

What?

Are you playing Skyrim?

I'm intensely curious to know what game you've played that has had a better journal.

I would like to "clean out" my quest journal. There are definitely quests that I don't intend to do. But I can see accidentally deleting one too, so maybe it will save some people grief not to have the option.

I have to say it doesn't bother me, as I don't view it as a bunch of quests I have started, but a bunch of things people have said they would like me to do. Maybe Kharjo will die, my grieving character will gain a nasty streak, and will do all those 'steal this...' quests that she has refused to do so far. Best to keep them in the journal in that case.

It doesn't have enough information. Basically, if you turn off the map markers, there's no way you'd be able to work out what to do or where to go for most quests unless you write it down on a real notebook. In fact, some quests even the NPC doesn't tell you enough to write down.

Well, Morrowind did, especially after one of the expansions. I would see more information in the Journal than I ever got in the game from an NPC about a quest. It is not so much that the lay out of the Skyrim Journal is bad, it's mechanics and information are what is lacking. I do miss the individual journal entries that came with each quest stage. That could help me when I stopped a quest progression for a while and then came back. I could more easily remember what steps and why I had done before.

What CCNA said. Add to that that any change to the quests system might be revert to its original state whenever a patch is released. That's why simply modding the UI should be safer. You hide the unwanted quests so they don't clutter the log, they go into a "hidden quests" list or something like that and whenever you change your mind you're still free to complete the quest as usual.

Skyrim's journal is not that good. Dragon Age Origins is better in my opinion. The entire not adapting for PC gamers was a big put off. I'm waiting for the modders to come up with something better. There are some now but without the construction set, it's much harder to make something that's really good.

I agree you should be able to remove quests, and be able to restart them. I'm stuck on a glitched thieve's guild quests that won't let me continue with the quest line, also, I'm never going to do the quest "Parthuurnax".

The UI in Skyrim simply wasn`t made with PC users in mind. Sad really since Rpgs are perfect for good UIs on the PC, but the need to appeal to Xbox consolers and Xbox gamepads has screwed that up.

I'd be happy for a hide quest / unhide quest type of interface ...
