Gold - what can you do with it?

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 7:01 pm

My character has about almost 1 million in gold now but while the game gives you a house you can buy and equip - there really isnt much more you can do with it.

Other than be thane and buy every house and equip them - is there anything else one can spend their money on?

Hitting a dungeon at this point and getting anything is nearly pointless other than to mow through the villians and get to the end.

My altmer's about 300,00 away from 2million. I give mine away to the little girl in Solitude, because she wants me as her daddy.

Apparently on the PC you can drop coins. I'm on the PS3, but I wish I could build a giant tower and drop my coins down it. Then I'd jump in Scrooge McDuck style.

Give some of it to your house Carl as a gift.

and your wife if you have one.

put some in a treasure chest for safe keeping.

buy evreything at evrey vendor.

Give some to each faction your in.

Throw some of it around in the streets

Do all those and i bet you'll have gotten rid of a good amount of it.

i put stacks of 10.000 on beggars randomly, only to have them wear the same rags and do their usual stuff even though they got enough money for nice clothes and a small house

the AI is dumb

Retire your character and buy him/her an island in the warm Abegean Sea

Apparently, every bandit in Skyrim wants to do that! :D

Finish the A Night To Remember quest and give 10000 gold to the Argonian who will later randomly show up. He'll buy a nice island in Black Marsh with it, instead of getting drunk with the 750 gold you'd otherwise give him through persuasion (if you didn't kill him).

Stock it in a chest, to use in times of need. You never know, maybe Skyrim will eventually be struck by famine etc. due to all the warring going on (it's kinda weird how most of the civilians stay pretty well-fed during civil war ...).

Start donating to temples, shrines, even tombs, word walls, ... Just put some money in those treasure chests instead of looting them completely empty, as a 'passage fee'/donation. I always stick a flower, Nord mead and some money in there with my Nord character, as a respectful gift.

...

I remember someone saying he's done that, but eventually his pc froze everytime he entered the cell where his coins were dropped. I don't believe he'd dropped so many coins either ...

Nah, the AI is fine on that matter. You really believe a beggar would suddenly become rational and buy the stuff he needs? Those guys have spent that money on booze big time. Probably had a nice party among themselves, the likes of which Sanguine would've been very proud.

Hold onto it, and hope that it'll come in handy for the inevitable DLC expansions.

All that gold and your still drinking that crappy Nord Mead? Start downing 3 or 4 Black Briar Reserves at a sitting and that will put your gold to good use.

This is an exceedingly dangerous practice. I cannot remember the last time I died, but it was many RL months ago, and long before I survived the whole ending of the world and trip to Sovngarde unscathed. But put me at the top of some remote, snow-swept shrine and show me a rare book just lying there... on the ground... well of course I couldn't resist picking it up and 'replacing' it with a hefty donation. Maneuvering in first person to place the weighty bag of gold, I took a step back, over balanced, and plummeted off the edge - splat.
No more donations from me.
Instead I spent my gold on having a copy of every spell book in a chest in case I ever needed to check what spells are available in the game, and then I splurged on one of every mage robe sold at the college just to check the different models and stats - plus they make comfy pajamas, and you can't have too many comfy pajamas. Not to mention buying a metric ****-ton of Moonsugar in the attempt to keep Marcurio's little Elsweyr Fondue habit a secret between him, me and the entire Khajiiti population of Skyrim.

Then there was the time I filled up the Thieves' Guild vault with gold ingots, flawless gems and Daedric weapons... Worked fine while I was a regular visitor to the cistern, but then I must have been absent for more than 10 days and the doors to the vault closed and now need a key which I don't have...
