J'zargo is broken, how do I fix him?

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 6:31 am

Here's the situation: I enter combat with J'zargo as my follower, he uses magic in pretty much every fight. After the fight is over and I sheathe my weapons/magic, so does he. Then when I draw again, J'zargo tries to draw his magic, but his default bow gets in the way, resulting in him being stuck in a useless drawn magic pose with no weapon. He can't attack, he can't move, but slides across the ground towards me when i move away from him, and I can't snap him out of it. I can still talk to him, switch gear, etc, but he just can't fight and seeing him slide across the ground is just jarring.

Is there any known way to fix an issue like this?

I had a similar thing happen with Brelyna. She was in a two-hander pose with no sword and wouldn't cast magic (I didn't have the weird sliding thing, though).
Her animations and behavior went back to normal after I entered/exited a few cells.

I had exactly the same situation with Marcurio a few days ago. For me, he seemed to be stuck with that dagger he's got, only that he didn't really unsheathe it at all. I solved it by taking that dagger away from him, upon which he suddenly pulled a bow and arrows out of nowhere. Then I sheathed and unsheathed my own bow and he could leave that silly pose again.

Try and give him a different weapon?

I had also quit the game and restarted it, but that alone didn't fix him.

Here's what I tried and the results:
Rearranging equipment, but this doesn't work.
Fast travel seemed to work, but could get annoying
currently, I cannot use Fus-ro-dah, I only have Fus, which does not work
I currently do not have Wabbajack, and do not know how that solution works.

Does using the console to kill him then resurrect him work?
EDIT: Just tried that. It does get him out of this problem, but it unfortunately resets his inventory, not ideal, considering it happens after every fight. Also, I can't take away J'zargo's bow, as it is default equipment.

Hrm. Annekke was once stuck in the "drinking and 'dancing' in a bar" pose on my adventures. This looked utterly moronic, so I told her to leave. At first, she then stayed in Riften near Balimund and kept dancing and partying; After I had been gone from Riften for a while, she was back at Darkwater Crossing and didn't do that pose anymore.

Now, I know that this is different than the spellcaster follower issue that all of us described above, but maybe you could fix him by just telling him to go away, then leave him be for a while, and recollect him again in a few ingame days or perhaps some weeks (give him time enough for a cell reset in the College of Winterhold).

I've been getting this a lot lately. It never happened before 1.5, but since then Illia and Eola have been stuck in pose on a few occasions. In battle they will say their lines but not engage in combat. I've started saving like crazy when they are in the correct pose, so I can do a reload.

The thing about Illia is that she's broken as hell anyway. I tried telling her to go home, but when I tried to re-recruit her she wouldn't talk. You also lose her for good when you send her home

Since you're on PC, there is a way to remove the Hunting Bow/Iron Arrows that companions come with permanently via console. Here's a video on how to do it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3boAGSko2EM

This works, thank you.

I have a new problem with J'zargo now. He won't follow me out of Shalidor's Maze in Labyrinthian. I've tried player.placeatme command, but that just spawns another J'zargo. If I tell him to part ways, he is stuck with that dialogue during the Labyrinthian quest where you can't tell him anything.

Did you try dismissing him and then rehiring him? While you're at it, take all his gear, dismiss, use 'disable' then 'enable', and then rehire him.

not placeatme. Open console, Click on him, close, move somewhere else, open the console and type "moveto player".

I've never had such problems like you, but I am using Extensible Follower Framework. Maybe you should consider using some kind of multiple followers mod? They have some additional features too, like letting them relax. Another great feature for me is that they have (at least EFF has) menu to command your follower without talking to him/her. It's really useful if you want to have follower who don't have voice for follower commands. Thats the case with Khajiit females.

Ah, thank you. Got through Labyrinthian without trouble and J'zargo is still behaving.

You're very welcome. And yeah, followers frequently get caught in Shalidor's Maze for some reason. The fix someone else listed works well obviously. :D

Heh, I was after Staff Of Magnus today and Jzargo and Shavari also glitched for me couple of times. Fast solution was to give all of them 'train' command in EFF, as I think it just disables and enables them, so they reset.
