How Does One Stop Skyrim From Automatically Updating?

I keep hearing about stopping Skyrim from automatically updating, how is that possible?

I don't want to be forced to use 1.6 the minute it is released. I want to let mods and a Script Extender put out updates to the new version, first. Otherwise, Skyrim becomes unplayable for days at a time, every time it's updated. I've been through this too many times before.

When I go into Steam and bring up the Properties for Skyrim, select Updates, and select "Don't...", it is set back to "Keep Game Updated" the next time I open Steam. When I've complained to Steam Support, they said it's supposed to do that. (Making even having that setting available deceptive. Thanks, Steam.)

So, how does one stop Skyrim from automatically updating?

It works fine for me. Whenever I click the option not to update automaticly, it stays that way. Try reinstalling Steam maybe...

If you play while your computer is connected to the internet, Steam won't allow you to turn down their automatic update tool. If you don't want your game to be automatically updated, you must play with Steam on "offline" mode.
