Oghma Infinium question...

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 12:45 am

I've been working on a book collection in one of my files, trying to get one copy of every single standard and spell book in the game for display on bookshelves. I was also wanting to display the Oghma Infinium among them... however, I don't know if I'll be able to both read it and display without exploiting the bug, which I would rather avoid. Does it disappear after use like spellbooks, or is it simply rendered unusable, like skillbooks?

If it disappears, I'll just display it and that'll be that, but it'd be nice if I could read it too.

It dissapears. But, there is a bug that lets you use the book, AND lets you keep it, but doesn't let you use it again. I can't exactly remember what you need to do, but it basically happens if you screw up the actual oghma infinium glitch

UESP says it's "removed from your inventory 1 second after choosing a skill and going back to the inventory". I read this to mean that it disappears.

I recommend to people to just use the glitch even if you only use the book once just so you can keep the book. IDK if it still works post 1.5.

I know of the bug, it's just that I'm trying to not exploit them - for example, I know of the soul trapping dead bodies trick, but I prefer to throw atronochs at my foes while I simply cast bound weapons. Works well enough, and I don't have to claim I exploited any bugs.

Thanks for the info, that's all I really needed to know. Besides, money is easy enough to come by. I can train those skills I'll never use with trainers anyways, I figure. Plus, since I use conjuration anyways, bound sword, axe, and bow can help me train those sections when the time comes.

It's not really exploiting if you only use it once, though. Unless you don't trust yourself. :P

It's a really cool-looking, albeit creepy-looking, book so think about it.

I'll be sure to save before taking a look, then. I do love reading many of the books in the game, after all. Hell, after reading Palla Vols 1 and 2, I got quite a kick out of the twist, in an "Oh, that's just WRONG..." kind of way. I really love the detail put into the game...

I never even knew it was supposed to disappear, I think the one time I had it I put it right on a bookshelf without reading it first - habit is to come home and immediately store all books on shelves so I probably stored it before I ever read it. Then realized what it was after I stuck it on the shelf and took it back off the shelf to read, and stuck it right back on the shelf without ever having it in my inventory again.

Would be cooler if you could keep it and put it in a display case instead of just stuck on a shelf.

Well, I have it on my bookshelf, and have removed it and replaced it umpteen times (and have used the exploit repeatedly for those annoying unused spells). It doesn't disappear. If you activate the bookshelf and use the "take all" function, it'll dump into your inventory along with the other books. If you select it from the bookshelf directly, you'll get the four options. Select do not read and it can be placed in your inventory that way. Note that the book is nearly three times as thick as the typical book, so that can cause some crowding issues on the shelf. It might be better left on a table or shelf (non-book) as a conversation piece.

For the exploit, it's as follows:
Spoiler

1. Activate a bookshelf and store the Oghma Infinium (OI). Exit the bookshelf and wait for the OI to appear there.
2. Without activating the bookshelf, attempt to take the OI. It will open and offer four options. Select "do not read" to place the OI in your inventory.
3. Open your inventory and navigate to the book listing.
4. Select the OI. This time select whichever school you wish to boost. Immediately close the book and drop it from your inventory (if using an Xbox controller, it's A-B-X in quick succession).
5. You should see your skills (and likely level) advance. Level up, pick your perks as desired, etc.
6. Pick up the OI off the floor. When it opens there will be no options displayed. Just place it back in your inventory.
7. Go to step one.

You can use the glitch and keep the book, then just don't read it again so you can have it on display.
