What Race Should I Pick?

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 1:24 am

Hey everyone,

I am currently starting a new character and am not sure what race to pick.

Skills:
Enchanting - I want to reduce my magicka cost for Illusion to 0% so all magicka will go to conjuration. May also increase damage with conjured bow or dagger respectively.
Illusion - everything almost.
Conjuration - basically everything, going to alternate between conjured weapons and staves. Necromany AND Atromancy.
Sneak (just to get sneak attack multipliers)
Archery - Just to get the zoom, I prolly wont do this but hey.
One-Handed - Armsmen for sneak attack with daggers. I may find I dont need it.

Basically a powerful conjurer and illusionist who is stealthy.

I am torn between Dunmer and Breton. Any advice?

To be honest I'd pick altmer for their +10 in Illusion and their starting +50 magicka advantage.
But if you are sure about dunmer or breton then I'd say breton, for their +10 in conjuration and conjure familiar for good tutorial skill training.
A dunmer vampire could also fit your build quite well- for vampirism would aid your conjuration and illusion very well.

And being a dunmer in particular would grant resist fire 50%, thus making stage two vampirism weakness null and instead offering resist frost 50%.
Being skilled in enchanting could offset the vampirism regen penalties, if you find the necessary enchanted item to disenchant.
That or optionally using the Lady Stone in conjuction with available regen clothing to offset them. But this is only if you want to go down that gameplay mode.

Well hope that helps your decision, somewhat.

Honestly, the skill bonuses don't matter. it will take you maybe a half hour longer (only counting time when you are leveling those skills) to get them to what they would be from your racials. Go for the other perks like more Magicka or fire resist.

Altmer are my favorite race with Bretons and the Dunmer running right behind them. There is no right or wrong choice on any race you choose, you can make any race be whatever you want them to be.

I'm digging my Breton build. 300 point carrying capacity out the gate, good resistance, great with swords/axes, and doesn't have the Dunmer's weakness to magic. Though my top choices have always been Dunmer, Breton, and Argonian (breating under water rocks).

Personally, I agree with Badprenup (great name, btw, ;-)); I find the race characteristics to be stereotypical and irritating. Just because I'm a Nord, I automatically am supposed to be a 2-handed warrior? What if my backstory, etc. leads me to be a thief instead? The ads for the game say you can be whatever you want to be, but they go and give a Nord warrior skills, Breton mage skills, etc. If playing an Argonian paladin-type makes you happy, go for it!

Dunmers are resistant to fire not weak to it.
