Biggest SuccessLet Down

Since Skyrim's been out for so long now, I was just wondering, at this point, what everyone liked the most about the game and what their biggest disappointment was. It can be anything from the storyline (why it's in the Spoilers section) to gameplay.

Best Parts!

For me, the best part about it was the absolutely massive role playing options that it gives. You can literally do almost anything you want. The best part is after the introduction, you can completely ignore the main quest and go out and do your thing, just like Morrowind and Skyrim.

I also liked how the races looked. A huge improvement over Oblivion. The Khajiit and Argonians look like actual cat and lizard people respectively instead of a guy in a costume, and the elves look exotic and non-human, just like they should. I would have liked Khajiit and Argonians to look more beast like, with digitigrade feet and all(like in Morrowind), but its still magnificently done. Besides that, the only thing that I disliked about the races was how it's still almost impossible to tell an Imperial and a Breton apart.

Kinda Disappointing...

My disappointments in the game are few, but still there. The biggest one was the guild storylines. They're so short, and after a couple days of adventuring, your done. For me, the worst was the Dark Brotherhood. It's not even the Dark Brotherhood anymore, its just a tiny group of sadistic misfits. Its not a flaw in the game, just a personal thing that I don't like about the storyline. I also didn't like the fact that you don't need to know a damn thing about magic to become the Archmage of the College of Winterhold. I would rather, for all the guilds, that you have to keep on doing more quests after the main storyline is over to prove your worth and actually become the guild leader.

Then there's the character creation. Its very, very well done, and I only have one problem with it. Basically, you can't make your character look a day younger than 35. I always liked the "coming of age hero" role playing experience, and this really messed with that. I have Skyrim for PS3 and I'm actually gonna buy it for PC so I can tinker with it with more precision.

The only other thing I didn't really like was some of the voice acting. Don't get me wrong, the voice acting itself was magnificent. But its just little things like the lack of accents for a lot of the races. You'd think Argonians would have thick accents not only because they're from so far away, but just the shape of their mouths. It'd be nice if they had a more diverse group of voice actors, but you can't have everything.

Best:
Probably the TG and the DB. I wasn't crazy about the shake-down quest in the TG, but it got interesting after that. I didn't like the first 3 generic assassinations for the DB, but did them to get to the main part of the quest - I didn't do any of the other radiant assassinations.

Worst:
Probably the Bard's College. I don't usu play bard types in RPGs, but the questline should've been a little longer at least and we should be able to play the instruments for cash, entertainment, and/or buffs and debuffs.

Best

TG by far. This bothered me a bit because I hate thieves not finding them romantic rogues as so often claimed in fiction. Yet I play it because why not get my money's worth from the game? Anyway, to my surprise it was intriguing with a neat payoff.

Worst

Either Bard's or DB. The DB was a good long quest with Shadowmere as a great payoff but the quest itself was disgusting and sadistic to the point of being nauseating. The Wedding part of the DB Quest was about as disgusting as any TES chapter and that's saying something. The Bard's was just insipid.

Best: The whole open world of Skyrim to play my way through over and over and over....

Worst: Don't have one.

best- combat, charector looks, graphics, dungeons, radiant quests though they really need to redo how their done.
Worse- story wise not enuf substance for me, weapons dont degrade, lack of spells, ranks and requirements missing from guilds, no underwater areas, the vampire balance wished was like oblivions way.

I'll start out with the worst just to get it out of the way cause I really want to end on a high note. The first time I played Skyrim, I was a Nord. I went through the story ect, and love 98% of the overall game. When I started a new game, I knew the story and I like playing as evil characters most of the time, so I chose to be a High Elf thinking that I could get in with the Thalmor of the Altmeri Dominion. When I finally came across the Thalmor, they treated me like they treated any other race and I was disappointed. I know not every High Elf is a member of the Thalmor faction, but they should at least give you the option to join. Anyway, that was my bad thing I guess. Pretty small deal really. The good thing for me would be the awesome Necromancer powers that you can learn. Oblivion was my first Elder Scrolls game, and I loved the necromancers, especially Manimarco, The King of Worms. I was disappointed to learn that you could not reanimate the dead in Oblivion with your own spells, you would need the Staff of Worms. Even then, it would only last for sixty seconds. The range of spells on Skyrim are so much more diverse and Necromancer friendly. I find (My character being a Necromancer) many spells and items useful in my pursuit of skill perfection. One of my favorite Daedric artifacts that you can defile, is the Star of Azura. Making Azuras Star black will allow you to take in human souls, just like black soul gems, only the Star of Azura will never break! You'll never need another black soul gem again! (Regular soul gems can only take in animal souls) That is another thing I like about Skyrim. You find black soul gems far more frequently than you did in Oblivion. In fact, you'd be lucky to find any at all! Making black soul gems at the alters was a pain in the ass in oblivion, because you had to wait for the "shade" to shine down on the alter at night, and then cast a soul trap on the alter itself with the regular gem inside. Skyrim just makes things easier for players who usually chose the mage skills.

If you don't like murdering innocent people, why did you join a group of evil assassins? No one forced you to join the Dark Brotherhood. I do like your enthusiasm though.

Just to get my money's worth out of the game and to see what there was in the DB quest. I can't very well know what's there until I try, now, can I?

best: stealth system they really overhauled the stealth system and made major improvements its really enjoyable although it's OP

worst: magic system pretty much the opposite of the stealth system they cut many things from it and made poor decisions to "improve" the magic system which made it worse and alot of the time is UP or boring

Best: the new leveling system. I was one of the people who went for efficient leveling in Morrowind and Oblivion, which really undercut the overall enjoyability of the game. Sure you didn't have to do it, but then you got a weaker character. That's no longer a dilemma now and I'm no longer spamming light spells at guild halls to earn enough intelligence points. The change is quite satisfying.

Worst: consistently darker questlines. Up to a point this is a welcome change; the Thieves Guild in Skyrim acts like an actual crime syndicate instead of the improbable Robin Hood plot from the last game, but the older TES games used to set up the Mages Guild and the Fighters Guild as reliable "good" factions. Based on NPC dialog I was hoping for the chance to solve the mystery of Winterhold's collapse and clear the suspicions against the College, but the questline goes in an entirely different direction. While it unfolds the new random NPC dialog makes a valid criticism: the College had no one's invitation to disturb a burial site. The rest of the questline does little more than clean up the mess. The Companions are considerably darker: players hit a brick wall unless they're OK with becoming a werewolf. Which is fine for people who want to go there, but cuts off another faction for the players who would rather be heroic in a conventional sense. The Daedric quests also change. Yes, most of the Daedric lords are supposed to be evil...but we didn't used to engage in cannibalism or deceive followers into becoming human sacrifices. Even the Azura quest adds an option to obtain a reusable black soul gem. The opportunity to play more kinds of evil does expand roleplaying in a way--I just wish it hadn't meant closing off routes to be good.

Best: There's so many great things about the game and so many different things you can do with each character, that I can't really nail down even a top 5. I just get lost in the damn thing; it's such a great distraction from reality.

Worst: It used to be the bugs but it seems they've worked most of them out. So now it's the ease of the game once you get to level 50 or so. It can still be challenging but only rarely. If you can progress to level 81 then there should be enough challenging enemies all the way up to that level. Within that complaint is another; more new monsters/enemies should be introduced as you go along.

If you vary your travels enough, you can pretty much see every monster there is in the game by level 12-15. In terms of animals, walk from Riften to High Hrothgar and I think the only thing you won't see are Polar Bears and Horkers. Then do the Under Saarthal quest and you'll see almost every kind of Draugr plus a Dragonpriest. Bandits abound.

Then travel to a Dwemer ruin: Falmer and Chaurus. And I think that pretty much covers 90% of everything.

I found the game too easy after LvL 50. I dropped my toon and created a different on only to start over. I added some landscape mods too and one mod which gens many different random monsters. The game is just plain terrific now - a real challenge and one where I need a good deal of ingenuity to raid anything rather than the walkthrough I had with the high LvL toon.

Since I'm a 11/11/11 player, I have almost forgotten the story at this point so it's 95% a new game to me and very challenging.
