Does it freak you out when some stranger comes running up to

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 8:33 am

It does me slightly.

There I am running along, over fields etc on the way to somewhere, then i see this single guy in the distance. At first I think he`s just a traveller and he`ll just pass by, but he`s unerringly zooming towards me with the single mindedness of a heat-seeking missile. I pull my two handed sword out to fight and -

"Hello, I have a letter for you. Doesn`t say who from, but here you are..."

I like couriers, but they do freak me out when they come out of nowhere like that. It`s just weird, weirder than if a bear or sabretooth tiger attacked.

First hint of that, I switch to third person. Sometimes less 'immersion' is called for.

Reminds me... just yesterday I was exploring the marshlands area north of Darkwater Crossing when... (I'll mark it as a spoiler just in case)

Spoiler
I came across a camp in the middle of the marsh. Sort of a tiny island in the marsh with a tent (perhaps two) and some clutter lying about. I glanced around and saw the body of a woman lying on the ground face up (so, not sleeping) and mostly submerged in the marsh (except for her face and upper body).

I clicked on her thinking she was a corpse and just as i did, she said "Need something?" Freaked me the hell out. I lterally went "Yahh!" She was a hunter NPC apparently sunbathing beside her tent.

It does. It's creepy when Dark Brotherhood assassins sprint toward my character. But what really freaks me out was in Oblivion, when Hirtel runs screaming down the path from the refugee camp, yelling at the top of his voice about how the Daedra are overrunning the place. That is truly alarming to me.

I have to admit that I'm a bit weirded out by the Imperial courier, who just seems to follow one of my characters for no apparent reason. He might be waiting outside a dungeon or a fort when I exit, and when I talk to him, he just blurts out his standard line about the Legion recruiting, and then run away. Repeat indefinitely...

for me its not when the NPCs like couriers approach me, but its when the NPCs randomly will follow me into one of my homes especially when not invited.

In the current game ive been playing, i thought id let Nazeem live this time around. Until he followed me into the breezehome and asked me his famous line "have you ever been to the......" Before he could say cloud district, I killed him.

Best part of it all is his wife doesnt seem to realize that hes missing, she doesnt say "i hope you get devoured by wolves someday" also there was no bounty.

I've played enough Bethesda games to know that if someone comes running towards me it's just a matter of I'm about to enter a scripted scene with someone. It's more a pain sometimes than not ie "sh*t, I didn't get a chance to save before this started".

The ones that freak me out at times, are those NPC's that come at you in the middle of no where asking you to hold on to a certain item and if you cross them they will find you.

LOL. You guessed it. Yea, I think it`s the first person view that does it. It`s like he`s going to come out of the monitor at you!

Yesterday, my mage was killed during the approach of the infamous thief that handed over his loot to me, while the bear just took the opportunity to beat the crap out of me, ignoring my atronach...

The one that actually scared me was running along and hearing that my footsteps sounded odd, like they were echoing, turning halfway around and hearing "Wabbajack!" shouted into my ear. GAH!

It doesn't freak me out when they do this, rather it really annoys me. Then again I hate force-greeting with a passion anyway; if I want to talk to someone I will, I do not need to have that person shoved in my face against my will.
