A few observations about an EPIC game

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 2:09 pm

I just want to start off by saying Thanks you Bethesda for delivering such a great game! This is by far one of the better games for the ages...well done guys and gals...well done.

I would however like to make some suggestions that i think would be very benefical in whole for the next Elder Scrolls Game whenever that is you guys/gals decide to make it

1. Please make the game harder! As it stands right now, this game is too easy...and your character becomes too power too soon and too powerful overall....Oblivion(which was also a great game) i thought my character became god like but in skyrim your character becomes like a mega-god...The hero in Skyrim becomes so strong that whats the point of having gods? honestly...the Dragonborn from Skyrim could probably kill Akataosh....I wouldn't think it should be that way....Dragons are too easy to kill, they don't inflict enough damage(even on master difficulty) and in all honestly....even if your wearing Legendary Daedric...you shouldn't be able to withstand more then 4 hits from a Dragon....and Light Armor users should have to stay away from the Dragon at all costs and attack from range or from behind...after all light Armor users are Light Armored...a run of the mill Steel sword will stab right through Leather, chain, etc...as somewhat of a history buff, there was a reason during the middle Ages that Nobles wore Heavy Plate Mail, and the common soldiers wore Light Armor such as Chain Mail, padded, leather etc....not only was it cheaper and easier to mass produce, but the Nobles in Heavy Plate mail were considered vitalbecause most of them were Officers, Generals, etc and were in charge and it would be a huge loss to lose a commanding officer. Light Armor should NEVER come close to matching the Armor rating of Heavy Armor...light Armor should always = Half the max rating of Heavy....but make the advantages of light armor(IE: Sneaking, movement Speed, regain Stamina, etc better and more the focus) Heavy Armor should slow its wearer slightly more...the stuff is heavy....there is a reason in the middle ages Knights in Heavy Pllate Mail rode horses, and engaged primarly in combat from horseback...very rarely did a man run on the battlefield on foot in heavy plate mail...the stuff was too heavy to do that...you would be exhausted in no time unable to lift a sword.

2. Mages: Mages were way underpowered in Oblivion(enemy mages anyways) and playable character Mages were uber because of creating custom spells....so it seems you guys did great in balancing Player character mages...they do enough damage to be viable, and as long as you keep on the move and focus on your advantages(speed, casting spells, summon meatsheilds, etc) you will be just fine....the problem now is enemy mages...these guys are the only enemies in this game that are actually a challenge to fight...and its because it seems you guys have buffed their Spell damage, Magic Regen, and totla Magicka...just a few minutes ago i watched a mage hold up a Ward spell non-stop for over 2 minutes...and he was still able to pummel me with area of effect blizzard spells(i killed him) but i had to resort to Archery to do so(more on that in a minute) I have also noticed that When "my mage character" cast a Blizzard or any higher level ice spell at ANY enemy...it doesn't slow them down at all...a mage hits me with 1 ice spell...i can barely move...its more annoying then anything...but this should work both ways....i can barely move, i hit them with one...it has no slow effect on them at all....Im glad Mages are challenging in this game, but they are a bit overpowered in the grand scheme of things...if you get caught out in the open with no place to run behind something...your in for a long potion chugging fest(unless your an archer)

3. Archers: Archery is my favorite playstyle, but Archery is by far the most powerful damage dealing skill in the game....in fact if one focuses on Archery...they need not ever draw a sword...i beat this game with out touching a mele weapon once uisng Archery(and im not an uber player)....Archery not only deals more damage then any other combat style, but enchantment add to it, you also have the range advantage, and you can use it while sneaking, you can combine it with poison, and your only limited by how many arrows your carrying(which its easy to be carrying a few thousand arrows by level 30 or so because they weigh nothing)....now add in Quickshot, and you can fire a bow almost like a machine gun...the Ranger perks makes you move faster with a bow drawn then you can run without it drawn....which means you can run circles around everyone and pelt them with arrows to the face...also bows Benefit from the Block Perk tree (Power Bash, Deadly Bash, and Disarming Bash) all work with a Bow...so now i can even bash with my bow (I disarmed a Drauger Deathlord yesterday with a bow bash) ...You have the 50% stagger as well...Add in overdraw...and you can see that Archery is by far the best damage dealing skill in the entire game....All that combined with sneak(3x damage), Poison, and Range...if you want to...you cna play the game without ANY enemy ever getting to mele range....even dragons....just run past....back off kep firing...in the "very rare" case a dragon lands literally right in front of you...you just bash him with the bow..and back off while firing with quickshot and side stepping...its quite comical....As it stands right now....unless you use enchantments(which i will get to in a minute) Archery is falt out the only answer to the overpowered enemy mages in this game....

4. Smithing, Enchanting, and Perks - This is where IMO...things could have really been done better....these 3 things lead to your character becoming way too strong too soon....first you got Armsman, Overdraw, Barbarian, and dual flury that give you 20% increases to damage, etc...then you got smithing which allows you to add even more damage to your weapons, and then you have enchantment that make you add enven more...all the while...your enemies never get the same benefits....why not have Bandits and others wearing "improved" armor and weapons....i see soo many enemies around forges....why don't they improve their gear...its like your character is the only character who can smith....its rare enemies are wearing enchanted gear...in Oblivion atleast Bandits got better gear and even Enchanted gear to keep them somewhat of a challenge....not much...but more then the Bandits in Skyrim...Also...Bethesda...you should not be able to fortify a skill over 100....whats the point of having a 100 skill max on a skill if you can increase it beyond 100? would it really be so hard to put a check in the game that checks what the base value of the skill is and if that skill is greater then or equal to 100 then the skill = 100....else the skill = skill + fortify number....just making it where you can't fortify a skill over 100 would be nice. ..Magic/Elemental Resist should be capped at 50%...halving magic damage is enough...not need to go farther then that...if a spell does 50 damage and you have 50% magic resist cap...cutting the damage to 25 is sufficent...85% magic resist is just...gamebreaker...it makes spells a non-issue...i tried maxing magic resistance...but then mages were not even hard...i had to have atleast 1 enemy that provided a challenge. If the player can increase his armor and weapon rating at a forge...so should the enemies....it only makes the game balanced....

5. Racial Abilities: I love the racial abilities in this game, they were well thought out...perfect...my only gripe is enemies don't use them....am i the only Argonian in Skyrim that can use my Histskin Racial Power? NPC enemies if races should use their Racial powers just like you can.....that would make things great! it would make things feel like a real elder Scrolls world....if your born with a racial power enemies of the same race should be born with the same power....enemy Argonians should use histskin, enemies altmers should use highborn, enemy Dark Elves should use Ancestors Wrath and flame cloak you if you get too close....

6. Daedric Artifacts- Daedric Artifacts should be the most powerful base weapons and armor of their class. For exmaple the Mace of Molag Bal should have the most base damage of any mace in the game and be effected by the Daedric Smithing Perk(after all it is a Daeric Weapon). Generic Daedric Gear and weapons should NOT be more powerful then a weapon or armor given to you by a Daedric Prince. according to lore, Daedric Weapons and Armor are Ebony with a "lesser Daedra" heart mixed into the forging process....weapons such as the Mace of Molag Bal, Dawnbreaker, etc are weapons imbued with the power of a Daedric Lord/Prince...they should be more powerful then a weapon created with the heart of a lesser Daedra(servents of the Daedric Lords)

7. Skyforge and Dragon Armor - Dragon Armor should be the most powerful armor in the game(even better then Daedric) and should require not only scales and bones to create, but also the Heart of a Dragon....since it requires 100 smithing vs 90 for Daedric it should be a few points better. The best Smithable Weapons should be the Nord Hero Line of weapons made at the Skyforge(and should require 100 Smithing and the Dragon Armor Perk to be made) and they could only be smithed at the Skyforge. These are the weapons of the Ancient Nord Dragonborn Heros...These are the weapons of the Nord Heros of lore...the weapons of the great men and women of legend who reside in Sovengarde....Nord Hero Weapons should be better then Daedric by a few points.....and should require Dragur Soul Essence(a gem found on high level Dragur Deathlords, etc after level 40) that imbues the Nord Hero Weapon with greater power and allows the Skyforge to create them.

in closing Skyrim is still a great game, you guys did a great job with it...im just providing feedback....The game needs to be more challenging....outside of mages....enemies in this game are a cakewalk....tone down mages to the level of the player mage, and then tone down the player....every fight with a human enemy should feel like a fight for your life....outside of fire, Trolls should be extremly tough....should regen health faster, and do more damage, and attacks from Trolls should have a 20% change to stagger you(after all they are huge strong brutes they should hit hard) Every attack from a giant should have a 30% chance of him insrtant killing you(even if you have full health) by him grabbing you with both hands, picking you up, and snapping you in half like a twig(after all he is a gaint, huge and strong as a mammoth, he should be able to break your character in half like a twig if you wade in too close)

Every fight in Skyrim(outside of wolves, skeers, and such) should feel like an epic struggle...should be a fight for your life...where mistakes in combat clost you dearly....enemies should be able to get critical hits just like you can....

outside of all of this though, this is a great game...the Story line, the quests, the actors that played the dragons and people, the towns, the map, the countryside, the mountains, forests, caves, forts, etc is all VERY WELL DONE! you guys done a great job on this part of the story.....I guess my only gripe is you made the game too easy and you made the Hero(Dragonborn) become way too powerful in the game, and he becomes too powerful too soon.....I will continue to play this game because i love it...i love the Elder SCrolls, i love the lore, I love Tamreiel, Long live the Empire! I just hope in the next installment...you make the game a little more difficult....i rarely die in this game...last time i died was because i accidentally jumped off a tower(i was distracted here lol)...enemies pretty much never kill me...I want to die sometimes....i want the game to challenge me....i want areas of the map to have "mega difficult" enemies until i get to high levels to deal with them....

overalll i give this game an A-.....if it was more difficult the game would get an A+++++

A good read, but next time break it up with some paragraphs it's hard as hell reading huge blocks of text like that.

The only problem with the Daedric Artifact thing is that they are too easy to get - Mace of Molag Bal in particular.

Perhaps Daedric Artifacts should only work at all when they have charge? Or have their damage greatly reduced when uncharged?

Good observations. I love this game and I agree it needs to be tweaked by Bethesda and by player made mods.

My current wish is that the main quest be better but it was so short and the last battle was not epic at all. The game also has some serious balance issues that need to be addressed and dragons need to be made much harder with the exception of ancient dragons

Great game! Put a 160 hours into it so far

I haven't done much enchanting just yet, just the point on enemy mages is very valid in case you yourself are a mage. They can literally machine-gun you down using ice-spikes. I was killed by four of this spell in the same time I got off a single dual-casted one... and that didn't even hit.

hmmmm

while i don't agree on most stuff i do agree that some balance tweaking (especially in the crafting section) was needed :P

a few mods later and Skyrim will be as balanced as SC 1 :D

Return to V - Skyrim
