Which shouts are best against dragons?

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 7:32 am

Particularly ancient dragons. I do not have all the shouts yet (I'm close to getting dragonrend), but from the ones I have I was thinking:

ice form - particularly fire dragons
slow time - to get in many hits while dragon is on the ground
elemental fury - ditto
become ethereal
fire breath - against frost dragons
frost breath - against fire dragons

Other than to shout to bring them down I don't bother with shouts while fighting dragons. In the time it takes me to shout I could be whacking them and doing a lot more damage.

The ones you listed could all be useful though.

marked for death or the elemental fury if you are dualwielding or using a slow 2 handed weapons the others you mentioned are fine against other creature but usualy don't do that much vs dragons or if nobody else is nearby , stormcall , my opinion and experience anyway
tho i think you could become very creative with that become ethernal shout,

overall you will be limited because of the cooldown time

Marked for Death, Elemental Fury, Dragonrend, and Slow Time are all incredibly useful.

As far as I've experienced, only Slow Time, Become Ethereal, Marked For Death (it helps quite a bit if you whack and slash at him afterwards) and Unrelenting Force (stops them from using their Breath shouts) are really useful. The Breath shouts barely do any damage at all to the dragon, I only use it to roleplay (since P'nax said the Fire Breath is used to say "hello". Now he always gets a fire blast in the face when I visit him, lol).

Other possibilities that I didn't yet use are:
- Elemental Fury: I use enchanted swords, so I can't use that shout. I'm still looking for the logic behind that ...
- Animal Allegiance: make a mammoth fight for you
- Call Dragon: for obvious reasons
- Dragonrend: also for obvious reasons. I don't use it because it's simply not in my present character's nature to use it against them, aside from Alduin. ^^
- Storm Call: I've only got two words, so it isn't powerful enough yet.

I'm thinking of installing a mod which makes the shouts a bit stronger/more useful 'though. I want to fight the dragons with only shouts, like a true DRAGONborn! :stare:

I'm on PS3, so I can't mod, but I sympathize entirely. For the record, the exploit to eliminate shouting cooldown does help with this quite a bit, and I've had a lot of fun battling on top of mountains with dragons using only the power of my Thu'um.

The only thing I don't like about it is the selection process for changing shouts takes so long on the consoles. That's why I'm upset that only Kinect owners get to use voice commands. The ability to automatically use shouts without having to open a menu every time you want to change them and the ability to circumvent unreasonably long cooldowns would make my Thu'um combat style a lot more fun to play.

You can easily create one for yourself if you want specific changes.

For me, I simply shortened the cooldown for all the ones I use the most.

Shout power is controlled by the spell.

Use Wabbajack together with the Shout to bring them down ..you don't need anything else believe me...

However the "best" Shout will depends even from your character and playing style of course. The only one i use frequently is Animal Allegiance...its too fun see a battle between an Ancient Dragon, two mammoths and a Giant.

If only Cicero would be staying out of the battle without forcing me to kill all the guys at the end....

Marked for death is so powerful against dragons so I stopped using it. You hit him once or twice, let him cook for a bit, and he goes down with 2 shots of relatively weak arrow shots or sword.

I've been using Elemental Fury against everything lately including dragons and it's a lot of fun. I have dual flurry perk and I dual-wield and do regular attacks with just the main hand only for extremely fast hits.

I agree. But I haven't all shouts yet, there might be a better I don't know about. :)

Me too, buddy. Me too.

If I were playing on a PC, one of the first things I would do is reduce the cooldown time of shouts, by a lot. As it stands, I tend to forget I even have them, except in certain specific situations, like Become Ethereal to take a long leap down, or Dragonrend so I can get in the beast's face. I also like Slow Time when fighting multiple enemies alongside followers. It cuts way back on the friendly fire.

This.

If you can get all three words for the Shout, then even the strongest Dragons are a cake-walk. When I finished the MQ, I used 'Dragonrend' followed by a three-word strong 'Marked for Death'. Alduin never got to take off again...

I usually just use the opposite elemental ones of what ever element they breath at me, plus the stormcall one.

Storm call

When I tried that the dragon flew off and didn't come back until the storm had finished, leaving me with the huge cool down time.

It's a general problem with dragon fights, all your time limited effects run out while you are waiting for them to come back.

You have to use Dragonrend all the time to take him down - and let stay there of course - and in the meantime "Wabbajacking" him ..this is what i mean  that shout have a very short "recharge time" if i'm not wrong and you can use it repeatedly before the dragon could fly away.

My most-used shout when fighting dragons is probably Fus Ro Dah, since it stops their breath move. I also use it to get the attention of circling dragons sometimes.

I used to use Marked for Death a lot, but I had too many instances where the shout would hit my follower as well, or would hit guards who were helping fight the dragon. That did not make me happy.

I do this.

I wait until the Dragon starts to hover for a Debate move and then fire up a 3 word shout.

I lost a dragon after a single arrow after one of these. I thought it had flown away, but had crash landed a long way away.

It does make the job of being Dragon Born easier.

There is another thread on the damages to characters / NPC's / dragons / creatures that this shout deals. It is a bit overpowered somewhat, and try not to hit your "Friends".
