Perplexing New Whiterun Crash - By our Powers Combined we ma

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 7:54 am

Alright, so just a little back-story on this. I'm running Skyrim on a new PC I just finished building (which seems to be running exceptionally well). I have, of course, started modding, and encountered the troubles often associated with modding. That said, I tend to be a pretty good at troubleshooting (I don't mean to brag, but... I am a... Community College Computer Science Major. ), but in this scenario I've got too many variables to work with without first consulting the community (if anyone asks, I hired you for consultative purposes, NOT just because you're beautiful ).

All that aside, here's my problem:

Every so often in Whiterun (ONLY in Whiterun thus far), seemingly always within a few seconds of loading the cell, my game will spontaneously freeze. Not just generic CTD freeze, but over-the-top, audio-skipping, Ctrl-Alt-Delete proof, only-cure-is-hitting-the-reset-button crash. Now, with all the other games I've thrown at this computer over the past 3 (4?) weeks since I built it, this is the only crash I've had. I tend to think this kind of crash is caused by hardware problems or something more sinister than generic-mod-conflicts, but the weirdly specific circumstances of the crashes make me think otherwise.

Now here are a few of my hangups:

It seems to only be in Whiterun, but I've spent more time there than any other cities, and the crashes are spaced enough (a few hours in between) that I can't just run in and out of doors in Solitude to see if it does the same thing (although i tried for a bit).

Skyrim is my most intensive game (especially with ENB and whatnot), and the cities are amongst the most intensive parts of the game. potentially this is the point at which I've pushed my hardware farthest, and it's exhibiting a defect? (but I've run things like Warzones in Skyrim to no problem, as well as Nexuiz/Dirt Showdown/Black Ops on the highest settings, and none of them have done anything negative.

I have a good handful of mods, and I always use Alternate Start (and avoid Whiterun for a while at the beginning of a new character), so I really don't know WHEN the problems started. The first time it crashed was soon after installing USKP, Vibrancy ENB and it's mods (CLO, RLWC), and Deadly Dragons (+Armory and Dragons Diversified + Patch).

Finally, here's the info on my setup that should be relevant:

My GPU temp has never exceeded 81c during my tests (but once my computer crashes I lose the test data, and don't get to see what it was doing at the time), and my CPU's cores rarely exceed the low 50's.

My Load Order is BOSS'd, BASH'd, and up-to-date with my version (I'm not in the Beta) according to NMM. Also my OBSE and ScriptDragon are of the appropriate versions.

Here's my Load order:

14 Live Another Life.esp [Version 1.4.4]
15 WATER.esp
16 Bashed Patch, 0.esp

What this doesn't tell you I will do my best to remember and explain. I DID run the Realistic Lighting patcher (successfully), I have Auto Perk/Stat/Level installed, as well as Vibrancy ENB, SkyUI, Natural Skyrim Rain, and A Quality World Map. I believe WATER and Immediate Dragons were both added AFTER I experienced the problem.

At the time when the problem first occurred, I removed OCS and Open Cities (which I had both added immediately before). I thought I fixed the problem, but I was wrong.

...and I think that's all I've got. Sorry that was really long-winded, I just try to be thorough. If anyone has any idea what could cause this kind of crash, or if you want any further information (as if!), just let me know, and I greatly appreciate all help (I hate being the question-asker, oi vey). Again, thanks for your time!

In the past when I've had crashes like this, a driver was usually the culprit. Are your drivers up to date?
Antique sound or video driver were normally my downfall.

What Skyrim patch are you using is it 1.6 beta or is it the 1.5.26.0 patch?
