I'm playing on my second playthrough as an assassin/archer with light armor on master level, my first one was a two handed, heavy armor warrior who became invincible around lvl 30 (at 53 i completed pretty much every quest and guild), problem is that anything kills me in one or two hits so I started bringing lydia with me and its going a little better but I had to nerf the level to expert or adept in a couple of occasions (bandit marauders).
Now I'm wondering...can you have more than one follower? if yes, how many can you bring with you at the same time?

You can`t have more than one Follower, but some quests will actually allow a temporary Follower with your Follower making two.

1 human follower and 1 dog

1 human and 1 dog along with one horse of which I recommend Shadowmere if you have one, if you use Conjuration magic and enchant some clothing to drop your casting cost for Conjuration spells low enough and you have the master level spells for thralls you can have another 2 followers in the form of Atronachs Thralls or Undead Thralls if you take the Twin Souls perk, thus allowing up to a total of 5 followers, 4 of which will follow you into dungeons and such... The spells are expensive but with the right enchanted gear anyone can use them...

To add to this, followers can use a staff to summon yet another creature.

I'm currently running with three 'followers'...

Jordis is my 'official' number two, having become my latest housecarl when I purchased Proudspire Manor in Solitude. Now there's a point in the Alduin's Wall quest where you agree to meet both Delphine and Esbern at Sky Haven temple in order to search for the wall.

Once you've met up with them outside the temple, you may choose to go in any direction you like ... and they will follow you regardless. I've taken them with me on a couple of misc missions to help reduce my quest list and it's quite amusing watching the three of them tearing the [censored] out of any opponents you may find.

The only issue with this is that both Esbern and Delphine constantly bang on about 'continuing to Sky Haven temple' and asking you if you're going the right way ... but it's quite a handy little option if you're struggling somewhere.
