Does no one know what the Black Hand stands for?

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 9:11 am

Hey!

I know this topic is not very important, but for my roleplaying purposes I need to know it.

Does no one know what the black hand stands for? I mean, I can run around with the DB robe with that big fat hand on my chest and no one will say anything. In Oblivion it was a bit odd that no one was suspicious because of you wearing assassin armor, but I can understand this, it doesn't reveal that you are in the Dark Brotherhood or that you are actually a killer, its just a black armor. But In Skyrim, this hand should reveal that you are a murderer of the Dark Bortherhood. Or don't the people know that this is the symbol of the Dark Brotherhood?

My character is very loyal to the DB and therefore wants to wear these robes but it just seems so odd that no one notices it.

What do you say?

Thanks in advance.

It meant something in Oblivion.

Four fingers. One thumb. Four Speakers. One Listener.

Don't forget that each finger has a nail, the personal assassins for each Speaker, the Silencers.
It really disappoints me to see that the once feared Dark Brotherhood has turned to complete [censored]. :swear:

The only thing I can think of is black hands Mephala. But that can't be right, can it?

The Skyrim Sanctuary at the start of the game is supposed to be the last Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary in all Tamriel. And considering that the Dark Brotherhood has always been a secret organization, I don't think it's very odd that no ordinary citizens recognize the motifs and gear of the Dark Brotherhood. I think it wouldn't be too difficult to role play it that way, at least.

In Skyrim the Dark Brotherhood has fallen, they have been systematically hunted down and destroyed with only the single Sanctuary remaining. Astrid did what she could to save the Brotherhood but she was never destine to truly lead. Her name should not be cursed but priased for trying to keep the Brotherhood alive. True she fell but at the end she realized her mistake. Now the Bortherhood must be rebuilt.

Seeing that the odds are good that the Night Mother is an aspect of Mephala, that's an accurate association.

The Black Hand was the organization that killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand. But that's real life, I don't know much about the TES Black Hand.

On my assassin chick I never wore the DB stuff in public and only changed in and out of it when I was out of sight. :P

Well, if guards know when we're werewolves and when we're members of the DB it couldn't take long before people knew what the clothes looked like.

I'm sure that's no coincidence.

Yeah, there are definite inconsistencies when it comes to NPC dialogue and AI. But if the OP wants to be able to wear their DB gear with a hand plastered across their chest, and wants to explain why nobody reacts to seeing a DB assassin wandering around town, then I think for RP purposes you could explain it as they don't know what DB gear looks like. Guards may have more info about stuff than ordinary citizens, and maybe don't share the info - perhaps?

Yeah, and the holds seem to be pretty separate so I guess as long as some nut in black and red clothes with a black handprint on their clothes doesn't kill 50 people in one hold it would take a long time to piece together the evidence. :P

The DB are assassins. They aren't supposed to get caught. If they were, the symbol would be a red hand, wouldn't it?

Anywho, you need somebody iced, you talk to the Hand.

I do agree with you. See I love the way Bethesda did the DB. I know I may be in the minority here but think about it. The end of the DB questline in Oblivion showed a purifcation riutal and all the black hand was killed save you. It is concievable that the DB fell into despair after that and is in shambles. I liked the fact that Astrid did what she could to keep it alive but without the tenets or a listener, how could she. I like that you have to reinstate the old ways and she does recognize her failings in the end. From an RP standpoint, it is awesome.
