The House in Windhelm

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 12:18 pm

I reunited the empire, and now I'm trying to buy the house in Windhelm of of the Jarl's steward. He says that he won't let me buy it because some unpleasantness has happened there recently. Apparently, I have to complete "Blood on the Ice" in order for it to be cleaned up for me to purchase it. I used console commands for force complete this mission, but the steward said the same thing. No matter what I do, I am never prompted to even begin "Blood on the Ice." I don't understand what the problem is.

should of just completed it normally, that's probaly why, or, it only done half of the quest ( the quest will either be done in two parts, or one depending on what you do throughout it )

Yea I had that happen to me too.... once you over take Windhelm for the leigon the quest will not start because the Windhelm guards are no longer in the city. Kind of a bummer, I guess the empire doesn't care that there is a murder lose in the city.

NO.

That is not at all what I just said. It isn't working properly as it is. Then, from that save, I tried to complete it through console commands. I only did that AFTER it wasn't working properly to begin with. I did not save it at all after I inputted the console commands. It is not working properly. The mission never begins, and the steward in not letting me buy the house.

Were you able to buy the house in Windhelm?

No, you can't buy the house until you solve the murder, but you can't solve the murder because the quest won't start. I ended up restarting the game anyway, because I bugged myself out of a lot of quests, this time I made sure to get that quest started before starting the civil war quest line.

It just svcks because I tried for quite a bit to activate that mission before I did much with the civil war missions. I'm trying to figure out how to get the house and the housecarl of Windhelm through console commands...

Just make sure that when you do buy that house to scroll down to the bottom of the list of decorations and purchase the clean up before you buy anything else. There's a bug where the clean up option disappears if you purchase the living room first and you'll be stuck with blood and body parts in the house. I found this out the hard way and had to back track in my game to correct it.

This quest has a bunch of known bugs. If you look at the wiki article it lists 4 or 5 major bugs that cause this quest to not start or have problems.

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Blood_on_the_Ice

If you are unable to get the quest to start someone posted the console commands below that helped me with the quest. Use at your own risk !

setstage a7b33 10
completequest ms11
<-------------- These 3 commands complete the quest
completequest ms11b

Afer entering the commands you can buy the house. Make sure to purchase the cleanup package FIRST (Preferred sequence- purchase package, leave and inspect house, then return to purchase other packages)

After you purchase the house you can speak to the jarl and he'll make you thane if you have satisfied the other requirements.

Additional Info:

If the house is still messed up by the quest and the blood and other remanents or not removed you can use the following console commands to try and clean it up:

DF492.disable

DF496.enable
<-------------- If after you buy the clean up package these 3 will reset the house. Can be run multiple times until clean
DF497.enable

If the above commands don't remove all the clutter from the blood on ice quest you can use the console command markfordelete when clicking on individual oddites. After marking anything, exit the house and then return to see what has been removed. The lighing effect is a known problem even with all the above console commands.

Use these at YOUR OWN RISK.... SAVE your game before any use of console commands.

Hope this helps you.. It was the only way I was able to purchase the house and it has helped a number of people before I found the post on THIS forum.

I did as you said. There is no blood anymore. But there are still a bunch of woodchips and bottles scattered about on the floor, even after I told him to clean up the murderer's mess, then bought all of the enhancements. There are also a bunch of ugly cobwebs, eerie fog, and chairs on their side overlapping my items, such as my bed. Does not look right at all.

For the things you're seeing, you can use the MarkforDelete command. Open the console, click on the item and then markfordelete. Careful with the cobwebs, and the woodchips. Its hard to know if you actually clicked on them and it can be a wall or the floor. . Do one at a time and go out just in case.

PS.. This is a really messed up quest and Bethseda is going to have to fix it. I just got mine the best I could and waiting for it to be fixed. Figured it was better than not getting the house or the quest anyway. I never had the cobwebs and I got rid of all the bottles and extra furniture before I bought the other packages so that I had it as clean as possible BEFORE the packages were added. Its not great but its better than nothing.

Try stealing the key to Hjerim from the Shatter-Shield matriarch. Go into the house and I think it should start, though when I did it, I hadn't helped the Empire

A word of caution: people that could complete the purchase still report that mannequins and weapon racks are buggy. I don't know how Bethesda will fix this especially for people who already got the house in game (or already visited the place) once as the cell is static.

This is the best house in game (content wise) but also the most bugged.

I typed in the enable and disable commands too, and I still got the stupid cobwebs. Every time I try markfordelete on the cobwebs, it deletes the walls or the ceiling.

This is so frustrating -_-'

I think I'm just going to say the hell with this house. What a glitched game.

When I play Skyrim on the PS3 I am at a loss, right? I did complete almost every of the "big" Quest chains except the Main Quest, and "Blood on the Ice" just doesn't trigger. Made me a little teary. Anyone knows some help? I already googled, looked on the TES Wiki...nothing worked T_T

I've peeved about this quest's glitchiness as well. If only buying Hjerim wasn't connected to it. =/ I wish there was an alternative to having to complete quests/become Thane to purchase houses. I'm trying to play a regular run-of-the-mill hunter with no interest whatsoever in clambering around draugr-infested dungeons or gaining an honorary title, which unfortunately makes buying a home impossible. Hm. Would the items/containers in a house like Honeyside reset if I were to unlock it via console commands? And would there be any way to 'force' my spouse to move there with me?
