Speaking of this; my character has been wearing an amulet of mara all week w/o a single person responding to it. Do I really have to go to Riften and buy one instead of using the one I found on a corpse?
I don't think you have to buy one, but you have to speak with the priest of Mara about it first. Then, of course, you have to finish the quests/favors the possible spouses have in order for the dialogue to trigger.
There are only like, 30 eligible marriage candidates in the whole game, and only a small fraction of them can be followers (Aela comes to mind. Also I think a couple of the mercenaries and the housecarls). I agree about Skyrim marriage being bad. I'd rather there were longer courting and seduction quest chains that made finally getting married seem like an achievement, and a couple of perks that made it worth while. Then again, though, I'm not playing the Sims and don't care all that much. I'd rather Beth spent her time on other things.
Rather about 60. Around 30 of each six. Among those who are both spouses and followers are all members of the Companions, all hirelings and all the housecarls. And a few more.
The others, though... I planned for one of my characters to marry someone with a house, then discovered that almost all male houseowners, and quite a few of the others, look like they're at least in their 60's... Nothing wrong with a few older candidates, it might suit some, but one or two would have been enough. They could have given us male Redguards, and Altmer, and Bosmer and Khaijts instead. There are even some who have quests, and can be followers, but still you can't marry them. Why?!
