How to begin the Hircine's totem quest?

Just wondering how I go about beginning this quest. I talk to Aela but all she gives me is Animal Extermination. Must I do a certain number of these?

Do a few of Aela's normal quests then she'll ask you to accompany her on recovering a Totem. I try to bring my friend to the werewolf side but he never listens.
