Being Railroaded in Honest Hearts

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 8:44 am

I really liked Honest Hearts, but I felt that it was at times far too linear and too forced, and here's why:

- Your companions can't come to Zion on the caravan. There's only one seat left and for some reason you cannot convince the caravan master that any of your companions are better choices than the drug addict with the broken Pip-Boy.

- After entering Zion, everyone along with you is shot to pieces. There's nothing you can do to stop it from happening, and the event does not pause gameplay, so there's no indication to the contrary. If you're like me, you played through this a couple times before narrowing your eyes at the screen.

- You cannot leave Zion without a map or directions. Forget that you have a Pip-Boy and a survival skill of 100.

- There is no "player housing" option in Zion (at least not an indicated one), despite the fact that you're defending the natives over a short period of time. Hence, your weight limit is important here, and if you're anything like me you don't want to throw things on the ground and risk losing them to an "area reset". This is terribly unrealistic, because if you actually arrived there, the first thing you'd ask is "where can I set my things?" or "where will I be staying?".

- If quest NPCs die, you get a new quest called "Chaos in Zion", in which your objective is to retrieve a map that you cannot otherwise steal. After doing so, you cannot do any other quests in the DLC and thus cannot acquire some unique items. You also lose out on plenty of gameplay that you paid for. If you sided with the Legion, which obviously was intended by the devs, you'll probably wonder why killing their highest priority target, Joshua, was not something they foresaw.

- On top of his preferential treatment above, Joshua cannot be pick-pocketed.

- There were no options to interact with the White Legs, to negotiate other resolutions to the tribal conflict.

- Despite there no longer being "one seat left on the caravan", you cannot return to the DLC with companions. Companions from the DLC won't come back to the Mojave with you.

I think it's fair to say that the developers wanted HH to be played a certain way, and while I enjoyed the DLC, I will admit that I didn't fully experience the freedom of choice that makes Fallout games great.

To be fair, in regards to the "you can't side with the White Legs", which is something I've heard a lot, the White Legs are basically raiders. Nobody batted an eyelid when you couldn't side with the Fiends.

And the whole DLC is about helping the Dead Horses and Sorrows. Joshua Graham is a big part of that, so is it really surprising that killing Josh would lock you out of the quests where you help him?

Maybe there should have been other quests for if you kill Joshua?
Maybe not even for White Legs, maybe just scouting quests where you gather intelligence about the tribes and then as a hand in the darkness you escalate the war between them or sabotage their missions, like, Survivalist helped some people from the shadows, couldn't we have done that if killing Graham or Daniel? Helping the Dead Horses and Sorrows without directly interacting with them?

You can't "side" with the fiends per say (they aren't a faction), but you can bring them drugs from the Khans without being attacked (at Vault 3).

Without Joshua present, the tribes still have Daniel's leadership.

The Fiends want a steady supply of drugs, which they can't get by killing every Courier who brings them drugs. The White Legs, on the other hand, just want your stuff. All of it. The easiest way to get it is by killing you.

Isn't Graham no longer "present" because you murdered him? That's the part to which the Sorrows and Dead Horses take offense. You kinda killed their war hero.

What makes you think the White Legs are motivated by theft? They're interested in killing Joshua, so they can be assimilated into Caesar's Legion.

Speaking hypothetically, and along with what I said above, if I handed Joshua over to the White Legs, they'd leave the area to join the Legion, leaving the Sorrows and Dead Horses to their land and a much saner leader (Daniel).

They're a raiding tribe. You are told by the NPCs that the White Legs do not know how to live off the land. They just kill and steal from others.

The White Legs are supposed to kill all of the New Canaanites, and Joshua and Daniel are not the only survivors.

My biggest complaint would have to be that all side quests were related to the Sorrows and the Dead Horses. I enjoyed how in Point Lookout side quests had nothing to do with the main quests. My favorite quest of that dlc was easily the Velvet Curtain.

If you sided with the legion, why pay ten dollars just to kill Joshua Graham?

In terms of player housing, you can't spit and not hit a cave full of player housing.

This, Graham's cave (angel cave) and any survivalist cave are great player housing. Especially if it has workbench and reloading bench as many do.
