A new way of playing for me

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 10:24 pm

So I am starting a new character who is going to live his life like a normal person in the world. Oh he may eventually do some adventuring but it will be a long while I think before any of that starts. First he is going to need to earn a living and find a house to buy, possibly even a wife if he's lucky. I also am writing his story as I play as a means of immersing myself into the game even more. I will share what I have so far (it has only been one day in game so that is as far as I have written) let me know what you think.

I awoke in the freezing cold, half covered in snow, where am I? I don't know how long I was laying there but I was starting to get cold, all I was wearing was some ragged clothing and shoes, there was a small knapsack tied to my waist so I opened it up to see what was in there. Maybe there would be something to give me a clue as to what happened. Not much was in there: a couple bottles of Alto Wine, a few apples, an Iron Dagger and some gold coins at the bottom. I didn't feel like counting it at the moment so I took out the dagger and closed the sack.

I figured I should get moving because it was getting dark and I didn't want to freeze to death. It didn't take me long to come across a small town, a passing guard informed me that this was Dawnstar, so I continued on into the town heading for the Tavern so I could get warm and figure out what had happened and what I was going to do next. There was some commotion going on inside the tavern when I walked in, some people talking to who I can only assume is a priest of some sort about evil dreams and saying that the whole town is cursed! It doesn't seem like something I want to get involved in, maybe I should not stick around for to long in this place.

After my nights rest at the Windpeak Inn I drank some wine and ate an apple, then I headed outside to try and find some work. The 75 gold I had left after renting my room for the night wasn't going to last forever and I have a bad feeling about this place and don't want to stick around any longer than I have to.

I walked down the road a little ways and I came upon a mine called "Iron-Breaker", I also ran into the owner of the mine, Beitid, she is a hot-tempered woman but she told me that she would pay me good for any ore I managed to dig up in her mine. Maybe I should save the ore however and use the smelter outside of Iron-breaker mine to make some Ingots. Well I managed to dig up 18 chunks of Iron in the mine, and it only took me 5 hours to do it, as a bonus I also found a Garnet while I was digging. That should fetch some coin at the merchants for sure! But it was getting late and I figured the merchant was closed up for the day so I headed back to the Inn.

Back at the Inn I sat down and admired my handy-work at the smelter today. Being my first time using the smelter I did a good job with that Iron Ore, maybe soon I will be able to make some armor to sell or wear myself for when I venture out of the town. After eating I retired to my room for the night and fell asleep listening to the songs of Karita, the bard at the Inn.

That is it for now, let me know what you think of the story, any advice on things to do playing like this.
My characters info is as follows:

Name: Kelious Tynan
Race: Breton
Description: His skin is a dark tan color, he has a rough look about him and is well muscled which makes him rather intimidating. He keeps his hair somewhat long but cropped up slightly.
Background: He never knew his father and isn't even sure if he is still alive somewhere, his mother never spoke about him either. His mother died a few years back from a disease contracted from a rabid wolf. He has been searching for his father since her death but has had no luck so far.

I guess he must have a big hatred against wolfs and therefore werewolves.

Am I right?

Actually yes, he does. Not gonna get into that part of the story yet though. I played more last night and I have more to write but it will have to wait a little while, if you like the story so far check back for more. I plan on writing the whole thing out.

Here is some more to the story, it isn't the entirety of my last play session but it is all I had time to write and go over at the moment.

The next day was pretty similar to my first here in Dawnstar, I went into Iron-Breaker mine to do some work, however there wasn't much left to do. I will have to wait until we dig a little deeper into the mine to gather more ore as it seems depleted at the moment. I spoke with Bietild outside the mine entrance for a few minutes and she wouldn't stop rambling about this other mine across town. Quicksilver mine she called it and the owner Leigelf and how he is a fat-head!

It was getting close to noon now and I hadn't much to show for my day so I decided to head over to this Quicksilver mine and check things out for myself. Apparently the feelings between the owners of these mines is mutual because Leigelf would not stop going on about how Bietild is a milk-drinker. Finally when he was done with his ranting he informed me that he would pay for any Quicksilver ore that was mined.

That was all I really needed to know, so I headed in and got to work. This mine was much more wide open, it seems that Leigelf was just going to completely hollow out the mountainside to get his ore. I don't know if I agree with his apparent methods but I needed to earn a living if I was ever going to get out of this town, so I didn't have many options while waiting for more tunnels to be opened up at Iron-Breaker mine.

Whew, that Quicksilver was tough work to mine, but it was worth it. I managed to gather about 17 good sized chunks of ore even though it took about 7 hours this time around. Again I didn't sell the ore but smelted it down. I managed to find two more Garnets and an Amethyst, so with my new-found wealth in gems I decided to look around town for the merchant. While I didn't find a general merchant, I did find the blacksmith and an Apothecary shop. Neither wanted to buy my gems but they did talk about what was going on in town with these nightmares.

After being here for only a couple of days even I could see how bad nightmare thing was for these people and I am starting to feel bad for them, maybe there is something I can do to help. I will sleep on it I decided and returned to the Inn to eat and get some rest. Boy am I glad that this nightmare thing doesn't affect travelers because I really needed that sleep!

I woke the next morning to Fruki and Irgnir sitting at a table in the Inn talking about their nightmares and after talking with them while eating some snow berries and an apple I had made up my mind, I was going to try and help these people out. After all they have been nice enough to give me some work and a place to stay. Fruki told me that I should speak with Erandur, who is the priest fellow that I saw people complaining to that first night I arrived in town, so I went over and talked with him about it.

I will add more later on today, right now I am going to get some sleep. Please feel free to comment and any suggestions about the writing is appreciated as I am not used to this journal style and writing has never been my strong point either. I know that there isn't a whole lot about his background posted here but I don't know much about High Rock yet to flesh some of that out. When I have time to read up on it I will post some more about his past.

Well done you, its good, I dont want to spoil your fun, BE AWARE there are 2 Bugs I have come across as I compleated the main quest yesterday, after 215 hrs, They are small and can be worked around..1 of them is the next adventure your thinking of doing. AS ITs A Bug i dont concider it a spoiler. When the priest stops talking and says follow me ( out side the entrance) save first, and make sure you go throuhg the door first, other wise you wont see where he goes, as only he opens a secret door. once in side. Oh and you'll need more than a dagger...lol..lol good luck.

Sorry about the wait for more story! I have been busy the last few days, but I have more reading for you all.

After speaking with Erandur about what thought about this whole nightmare epidemic, I came to realize that he knew quite a bit actually and that he was planning on looking for someone to help him bring things back to normal for the townspeople. He explained that a Daedra by the name of Vaermina is stealing the townspeople's memories and that is the cause of the nightmares. He also informed me that there may be a way to stop what is happening and that it would require venturing into a place called Nightcaller Temple. He did not tell me much about the Temple itself but I got the feeling that I would need to be better prepared if I was to help the generous people of Dawnstar get rid of their curse!

So I set off from Windpeak Inn that morning on a mission to better equip myself for the adventure ahead of me. My first stop would be to smith a better weapon because I was going to be doing some hunting. I visited Rustleif at his forge, asked if I could use it for a little while and he happily agreed. Telling me that I could use it whenever I needed and that if I needed any materials to check with him or his wife, as they had a good supply. As it happens I did need some leather straps to make my sword so I gladly paid him for what I needed and continued on with my forging.

The sword was of good enough quality and it would serve its purpose for the time being until I could create something of better quality. Rustleif told me I had done a fine job for my first attempt at forging as well.

With my new weapon in hand it was time to head out into the wilds and hunt some wolves! I suppose I could have gone after some deer or goats, but wolves I held a certain hatred for after what had happened to my mother. I will never end my hunt against those damnable creatures!

As it happens I didn't have to venture too far out to find a small pack of wolves to bring down, and after landing the killing blow to the final one I set to work with my dagger skinning the mangy beasts. The pack of wolves I killed provided me with enough pelts to get started on my next job...smithing some armor for protection. It took the rest of the day to work the pelts into leather, so when the last pelt was done I gathered up my things and told Rustleif that I would need his forge again tomorrow and possibly the day after as well. He didn't have a problem with that so off I went back to the Inn.

I found Erandur still hanging around the Windpeak when I got there so I told him my plans and that it would be one or two more days until I was prepared to help him. He seemed a little anxious to get going but told me that that would be alright, so long as I really was going to help him. After assuring him that I was indeed still planning on helping rid the town of this curse I ate some roasted wolf meat and drank some Nord Mead and headed off to my room for some sleep.

It's always a good idea to mention any previously published material that you are basing your story on. It's the nice thing to do.

I'm not sure I would be able to play like this for very long or write it down. You're doing a good job. Keep it up.

You are right, I did get my idea to play this way from a story like that however it was not this particular story. The fact that we both started our stories in the same town was pure coincidence, I chose Dawnstar because one my other playthroughs I had never been near that area of the world and I wanted a fresh start and new things to discover. The story that I read was an older one from the morrowind days of Elder Scrolls. I do not have the link to it, but I will look for it and edit the link in.

I wasn't sure I would be able to pull it off either, because I am not a very good writer, but the story just kind of flows out as I play the game. In my first post I stated that I wasn't going to be doing any adventuring for a while because I wanted him to earn a living and buy a house, however what I found was that it made sense for my character to want to help these people that were helping him. I actually am going to be writing about his adventure through the Nightcaller Temple as well as one other thing that he had discovered while out hunting (don't want to spoil anything so that is as much as I will tell for now). Although there will be some adventuring I am trying my best to not make that the main theme for the story.

*edit*

This is the story that I read which inspired me.

I assume you wanted me to look at that thread for the information about housing and dragons? I thank you for providing that link but I already knew that stuff  . It is good to have it in the thread however in case anyone reading it wants to give this a go and isn't sure about some things.

If you're playing on PC there is a console command that could open a whole new way of doing this.

Addtofaction 000E0CD9 1

This will make you a member of the bandit faction which means most bandits will be your pals instead of trying to lop off your head. So you can live your live in a cave surrounded by friends and do what ever bandits do.

Edit: Just make sure you have yourself selected or use player.addtofaction

That sounds interesting! I don't think I will do that with this character, however, possibly on another one. Kelious is a kind person and will do what he can to help out his friends. I'm sure that at some point he will befriend one of the Jarls and be able to purchase a house, I will just have to wait and see where his journey takes him as he searches for his father.
