Blown away by Skyrim

Post » Fri Jun 08, 2012 2:36 am

Hello all,

I'm new to the community. I just bought Skyrim yesterday. Never played of the other Elder Scrolls games, since i'm more of a FPS kinda player, but i just want to say i'm totally blown away by this game!! And i had to go to 5 different stores yesterday to get it!!! :swear:

Never been a RPG fan, but this game has totally convinced me and i'm already thinking of buying Oblivion.

I also have a few new player questions. :ermm:

1. How can i heal myself?
2 How can i use magic?
3. How can i use double wielded weapons?
4. Is there a place where i can upgrade/improve my already existing weapons?

Much abliged.

What platform are you playing on?

If you learn smithing, you will be able to improve weapons and armor. Any smith will give you a starting tutorial. For instance, in the town you're directed towards after the opening sequence in Helgen, go to Alvor the blacksmith and there should be dialogue where you ask him if he needs any help. That's a smithing tutorial.

Healing yourself- potions or the healing spell that every character has to start with. You can drink potions in your inventory menu. You can equip spells in your powers menu, though better if you add them to Favorites and switch off from there. Once in Favorites, they can also be hotkeyed.

1. Press tab (on PC) or enter your item menu, there will be a magic tab, press it. Under the restoration tab there will be healing spells. Click on it and it will be equipped in one of your hands.

2. When a spell is equipped in one of your hands you can activate it just like a normal attack.

3. Left click, right click the weapons you want to wield, this will give you the dual wield option. Warning: dual wielding is kind of a pain to use with spells at the moment. I am sure this will be fixed soon. On the other hand if you just want to build a berzerker type character with no magic dual wield works really well.

4. Look for black smiths. There should be a table at the smiths. Go to the table and activate it, under the item you want to upgrade will be a list of materials you need. Note: if you place perk points into smithing you can upgrade armor better and faster.

Welcome to the world of Elder Scrolls! I have played Morrowind and Oblivion prior to this title, and the same thing is happening with this game. I am totally hooked and amazed! Celan did a good job answering your questions, so I won't add to that. I will say that your thoughts of buying Oblivion will be rewarded if you follow through with them...ENJOY!

You will be hooked on this game for weeks most likely. By the time you really start to think about getting Oblivion Beth will release a good DLC or modders will release a awesome mod that will remake the game. Same exact thing happened with Oblivion. Enjoy!

1. By using health potions (which come in distinctive pink containers) or by using magic. I believe the first one you can get your hands on is Healing.
2. To view any spells you may have, press O and select Magic. You can then see and equip any spells you may have.
3. Are you asking how you dual-wield weapons, or are you asking how you equip two-handed weapons? Assuming the former, you can dual-wield weapons by selecting the desired weapons with L1 and R1. If you want to have a dagger in your left hand, select it with L1 and so on with the other hand.
4. You can upgrade weapons at Grindstones and armor at Workbenches. In Whiterun you can find both next to Warmaiden's.

Note: The button presses are assuming you are playing on PS3.

im going to answer anyway because i can

1. How can i heal myself?
i recommend training in restoration magic. if not, use potions

2 How can i use magic?
you can buy spells from various npc's. i suggest heading to winterhold college as there are npc's selling spell books for each class. the higher your skill in each class of magic the more spells you can buy and use

3. How can i use double wielded weapons?
i cant be bothered answering anymore

4. Is there a place where i can upgrade/improve my already existing weapons?
no u

My wife thought i was watching a blue ray movie on the PC lol..

The mods make such a difference and may i advise you guys to download the Sky booster by Alexander Bale, on the most demanding spot (Whiterun top of stairs just next to Dragonreach), my FPS went from 29----> 38..

For all our complaints, Skyrim can be awesome. It's why we complain rather than just play a different game. Because Skyrim has amazing potential.

Don't listen to him Oblivion was great, all TES games are. I wouldn't go further back than Oblivion and Morrowind though, Daggerfall while legendary... is too old looking now to play unless you played it back in the day and its nostalgic.

OP, welcome to Sky. Like you, I played FPS and single player games since 1982. Then I got into D1, D2/LOD and similar games, and it opened up a whole different genre of games. Eventually I went to WoW/Rift. But also over the years, Bioware, and the previous TES games.

BTW, you can open your "inventory" during a fight - it will stop the action - and drink health and/or mana potions (at least on the PC). Your health bar will be on the right bottom of your screen, and you'll see your health go up while you're drinking, so no chance of drinking too many potions.

Also, on the PC you can set things as your "favorite," and when you open that screen it also stops the action, so you can swap weapons, spells, etc. I'm saying that because on the PC you're limited to 8 hot-keys, but you can have many more favorites that are not hot-keyed, in the same directory.

Good luck and enjoy.

L1 and R1 stand for your left and right hands. So highlight a weapon and tress the selected hand to put it in by pressing either R1 or L1.

Also should add that some weapons require both hands so you wont be able to equip them seperately to each hand, like for example a greatsword.

I've been playing daggerfall, which I never got to in the old days. In my opinion , it's a great game but does have some glaring flaws.
