I'd reccomend doing a stealth or melee based character first, mages aren't as fun.

Apart from also taking smithing (for the heavy armour), that's pretty much my character build. Had no issues thus far other than heavy armour svcks during the early levels, but i suppose that's always the case unless you're running into the thick of the action all the time, which i wasn't.

Oh aye, my character is a female Bosmer. becasue playing a Breton gets boring after awhile, so I just mixed things up a little.

I already had a nord assassin, and I'm also planning to do a vampire assassin/illusionist.

Yeah, sometimes it's better to play something different. I've had my fill of stealth, so time to start something new and it's a lot better when you're running into the thick of it as you feel more involved.

Yeah, that's exactly the reason I want to now have a battlemage.

I had a mage before but didn't continued it, I don't even know why I stopped playing my mage.

That's not a battlemage, it's just a mage in plate :P.

A battlemage must have at least one normal weapon proficiency. Otherwise it would just be a mage wearing armor. Battlemages combine lethal spell casting with heavily armored combat. Also, restoration and illusion aren't common proficiencies for battlemages

In Skyrim it could be something like this: alchemy, alteration, conjuration, destruction, heavy armor, enchanting, with one-handed as a weapons proficiency.

In previous TES games the Battle mage class was as follows: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Battlemage#Battlemage, http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Battlemage#Battlemage. Other than that you're free to role play whatever you like off course, and name that which you play any class you like.

@Houseparty

Hmm, my idea of the battlemage is not of a heavy armor wearing combat mage, but a regular robe-wearing mage that also engages in melee combat (think gandalf). Spellsword is probably what you're thinking: a heavy armor fighter with some strong spells as backup.

@ asgard.

Not really actually. Not in the TES universe that is. (See the nice links I provided.)

[edit]
One could ditch the heavy armor off course, that's always a prossibility, but my point was that there needs to be at least one weapons proficiency.

Ultimately, it comes down to this, spellswords, battlemages etc were just some dude's preconceived idea of what things should or should not be. It's not like knights, archers et al where we have real life documents to fall back on. Hell, if real life history can be amended as and when new information comes to hand, i'm sure the same logic can be applied to mythical lore.

i don't see how anyone can be wrong or indeed correct when arguing the toss over what makes a spellsword not a battle mage and vice versa.

It's like arguing over why mages opt for cloth over plate, when common sense would tell you physical armour would be a no brainer regardless of your use on the battle field. But because some dude once decided mages = cloth, it's how things are, even though it makes no sense whatsoever.

Real life knights are as much a grey area actually. Both in practice and in ideals. ;)

My Battlemage:

-Heavy armor
-Smith
-Conjure
-Shield
-One handed/Dual
-Restoration
-Destruction

Race:
-Breton= 75% magic resistance+ Shield perk and Speelbreaker= 175% magic resistance
-Deadric Mace + Children sword Legendary+ some perks= around 250 damage, not too much.
-Companion= Mjol the Lioness+Deadric armor with enchants+ Vonldrud.

Well works very well now. A mage can barelly hit me while iam usign a shiled. And i can summon a Dremora Lord to help me agaisn't the dam Volkihar vampires. Meele enimies are easy prey.

Well, it seems Morrowind has a completely different interpretation of the battlemage than Oblivion. That is unfortunate. It's like even the devs themselves don't care about their own classes' lore.

Looking at this from a Medieval pov, it could be argued that almost all medieval history is a grey area because we're relying on someone's word rather than experiance. most of what we know from that age is only based on taking a number of similar works at face value whilst disregarding others.

In some ways, it's too bad they did away with the Oblivion style of magic usage. Having to go into your inventory to change out what's in your hand to switch to a spell in your hand is not as good as being able to switch to your equipped spell on the fly while still having a shield and sword equipped.

Oh wow, spells in both hands. In the meantime, they reduced the ability to switch between them without constantly going into your favorites or inventory menus. I'd rather go back to spell in 1 hand and still sword/shield equipped.

A paladin type character was much easier and much more rewarding being able to heal on the fly without changing out what's in your hands.

Well, it seems Morrowind has a completely different interpretation of the battlemage than Oblivion. That is unfortunate. It's like even the devs themselves don't care about their own classes' lore.

That's because they ditched the medium armor skill. The battlemage class and the spellsword class already largely overlapped. With medium armor taken out of the picture in Oblivion the classes became even more alike when the devs replaced medium armor with heavy armor in the spellsword skill set.

Also, choices had to be made since in Oblivion less skills could be put into a class. (Morrowind: 5 major and 5 minor, Oblivion: 8 skills)

Spellswords and Battlemages are two sides of a balance imho. The spellword is slightly more orientated on physical combat, where the battlemage is slightly less orientated on physical combat. A spellsword uses magic to support his physical skills, whereas a Battlemage uses physical skill to support his magical exploits. At any rate, how you balance it out is up to you, the player.

My Battlemage:-

Heavy Armour
One-Handed
Destruction
Alteration
Restoration
Conjuration
Smithing
Enchanting

I am still only level 47, but when i get to 81 these will be my perks

http://uk.ign.com/builds/the-elder-scrolls-5-skyrim?d=000000000000000000000000000000012111000000111112000201111011111111100210101011101350001110010000111115111111100000000000000000050111103

As you can see I still have 2 spare perks, i'm thinking of putting them into dual-weilding and then taking a Perk from somewhere else to get the 3rd perk for dual weilding.

Also, I have no perk for Dragon Armour, waste of a perk if you ask me.

Also, I didn't bother with the Expert and Master Restoration perks, once monsters pass level 30 the Undead run away thing becomes useless.

I have take 2 perks each for Augumented Flames and Lightnining in case I come up against something which resists fire, but I havent taken the final perks in the two elements because from experience they are also a waste of perks.

Thanks for your opinion.
So I have to add some physical means to become a battlemage, so I just added the 5 armsman perks to become a viable battlmage?
